Half marathon - any one doing one?

Cherryminx · 31/12/2015 16:25

There was a thread last year which I looked at in admiration as I struggled through C25K and then went on to run a 10K. So I can hardly believe that in a fit of madness I've signed up for a half Marathon in May.

Training starts tomorrow! Would anyone like to join me?

vet hard as it is, if you have chronic spin shints it might be better to postpone, assuming you want to carry on running and do more in future. Although I probably wouldn't take my own advice, and have struggled through more races than I care to remember Grin. Maybe that's why I never get any better Hmm

I always say that if you can run 10 miles you can run a HM. When you get to 10 miles you just tell yourself it's only a parkrun to go Smile. If you decided to continue I'd ditch the plan and just keep ticking over. I've run several HMs on v little training, but that's because I have run 4 or 5 a year for the last 4 or 5 years so I know I have it in me.

Life sounds very busy and stressful for you, and although running is usually a good stress-buster, if it is becoming a chore it might be worth thinking about doing a bit less just while things are busy.

Cherryminx · 22/09/2016 21:49

Hi all. Have completly lost the plot of who is doing what and when. I got the number for the HM I was meant to be doing this weekend Sad.

What happened to yours chutney. Are you still doing it?

I've hardly run at all recently due to school hols/ September disorganisation (all routines have changed and don't know if coming or going). So have decided to get back into the swimg of things by doing my local NT 10k each month till January and then do the training programme I did last year in preparation for the same HM I did last year in May.

Feel a bit cross with myself that have frittered away the summer evenings when I could have been running but the problem with my hip/ bum/ groin has been ongoing so maybe resting it a bit will have helped.

That' a shame Cherry, although I am sure the rest will have done you good. Your plan sounds like a good one.

I've just booked a 10K in early October, then I have the Royal Parks the week after. I'm thinking about (but haven't booked yet) a trail 10K in the Peak District in November, and then have my local HM in December. And that's it.

chutneypig · 23/09/2016 06:03

Oh Cherry that must have been a jolt to get the race number. I thought my training his time would go great, more time, better idea of what I was doing and it's not been the case at all. I think your idea of the regular 10ks is great and will be a good base for the HM in May.

Mines this Sunday and I've gone completely off the rails. Only running I've done has been an obstacle course 5k last weekend and I was dreadful. I think the rest has helped a bit, I should have done a short run this week I think but life got in the way. I've been concentrating on eating enough and I did get some iron supplements and I do feel better. This one will be a completely different beast to my last small local one, so I'm hoping the atmosphere will be a boost.

I've just booked another half for December, I was in two minds as the sweeper bus is coming at 2.30, but it sells out so quickly I bit the bullet. I've got a couple of 10ks booked, I definitely prefer the cooler weather!

The trail in the Peaks sounds good Fifty, I'm guessing that's a proper technical trail with lots of hills! Bit of a change from Royal Parks, is your DS doing it too?

HalleLouja · 23/09/2016 06:14

Fifty are you doing RPHM? I am too. I did a few long runs over the summer including a trail half on my doorstep. That was hard I did doubt myself then. Anyway last long run on Sunday. I am hoping all the hills I have been running up and down will mean the flat race will be a nice change.

FiftyNineOhEight · 23/09/2016 07:29

Hello Halle good to see you! Yes, I'm doing the Willow 10K followed by the Royal Parks. Maybe see you at one or the other?

chutney the plan was for DS to do the trail 10k with me, but it turns out he has a rowing commitment that day. So I might rethink and go to watch him row instead Smile

HalleLouja · 23/09/2016 09:12

Fifty not sure about Willow should be taking it easy that weekend and its quite an expensive run. Could go and trot round.

Cherryminx · 23/09/2016 23:47

chutney - good luck. So impressed that you are doing it and hope it goes well. Let us know how you get on.

As I said when I started this thread - training starts tomorrow.

Planning a gentle 3 miler to get me back into the swing of things.

Thanks Cherry Smile I've been feeling the urge to run today so much better than I was last week. Hopefully will dodge the rain!

Hope the run went well today.

FiftyNineOhEight · 25/09/2016 10:10

Hope your HM goes well today chutney looking forward to hearing all about it!

emummy · 25/09/2016 10:38

Good luck chutney, hope it goes well.
Final long run for me this morning, was a nice easy run along country roads, cool & cloudy. Feel nice & relaxed now, don't see that lasting!

Runningupthathill82 · 25/09/2016 11:55

Hey Fifty, what's the trail race in the Peaks? I'm after a November 10k and am struggling to find one that's not the Abbey Dash. Is it the regular Longshaw one?

Good luck for today chutney, you must be finishing round about now!

FiftyNineOhEight · 25/09/2016 12:00

It might be rumning. It's the Wildest Peaks Trail Run on 20 Nov, the website says the venue is the Moorland Discovery Centre, Longshaw. Have you done it before?

Runningupthathill82 · 25/09/2016 12:46

No I haven't - I think it's a different thing to the regular National Trust one, even though it starts at the same place.
Thanks for the tip, I'm signing up!

chutneypig · 25/09/2016 14:51

Afternoon all Grin. All went well, had a great morning, I loved the atmosphere. Loads of support around which made a huge difference. Despite all my worries I felt pretty good all the way round - no official time yet but my Garmin says 2.16, so five minutes quicker than my first half.. I think it helped it was so busy, much better pacing at the start.

emummy · 25/09/2016 15:14

Well done chutney, that's a great time! Glad it all went well. Feet up time!

FiftyNineOhEight · 25/09/2016 17:34

Glad to have been of help running I might see you there if i decide to do it.

chutney you absolute Star what a brilliant time. I'm so pleased you had a good run.

I had a rubbish 5 miles this afternoon. I had asthma when I was younger and it occasionally comes back. I've been a bit wheezy all week and couldn't get my breath properly today. It also occurred to me on the way round that I could probably do with a bit of an iron boost.

Jointhejoyrun75 · 26/09/2016 11:28

Well done chutney! Sounds like a great run.

HalleLouja · 26/09/2016 11:43

Well done Chutney.

KittyandTeal · 26/09/2016 12:39

Wow chutney that's a brilliant time.

I did 8 miles this morning in 1:31. I took your tips and took haribo with me, had one every mile from 4 plus hydro drink (I sweat disgusting amounts and it's really salty, I find I need hydro drink past 6 miles now) I also tried out a gel at 6.5 miles, mainly to see how my stomach dealt with it and it was fine. Tastes disgusting and the texture, especially warm, was less than desirable but it did the job as I got to 8 miles and could have kept pushing.

That's my furthest distance so far and I felt pretty good. Thanks for the advice. I'm starting to feel a bit more confident now.

stilllearnin · 26/09/2016 13:38

chutney!!! fantastic time - I bet you are still high from that?
I missed the long run this weekend as I have been having funny turns - but just did a super speedy two and a half miles in my lunch break.

Thanks for the nutrition info kitty I need to do a trial run on nutrition too.

standingonlego · 26/09/2016 15:58

Glad your HM went well chutney. I am feeling more confident about my Nov trail half after doing a steady 7 miles last night. I never take extra fuel or drink so maybe need to consider a few haribo in pockets for next weeks long run.

chutneypig · 26/09/2016 18:32

All your input on hills was a great help. I managed the first killer hill section ok, but walked bits for the remaining hills and I think it was the best thing to do to conserve energy. My quads are feeling it today though but only aches no real problems.

Half marathon - any one doing one?
chutneypig · 26/09/2016 18:35

I'm sticking with the iron for the time being Fifty, might well be worth thinking about. I remember being very breathless when I was pregnant and when they gave me iron supplements I couldn't believe the difference.

I wrote down everything I did on the food front as it seemed to do the job, I know I'll never remember next time.

Is the Royal Parks next up?

londonmummy1966 · 27/09/2016 17:54

Hello everyone = had a crazy weekend sorting myself out for the new academic year this week (idle students..) and then got bogged down with family stuff.

chutney this was brilliant - fabulous time - I did think of you as I decided not to try and squeeze a long run in this weekend....

Hello Halle - I'm doing Royal Parks as well - it didn't look that flat to me though! Fifty I agree that top is very orange which is never my colour and in particular when I am so puffed my face matches.....

I got a reasonable time at parkrun on Saturday - marching the hills is definitely working. I managed 8 miles yesterday to make up for missing out on Sunday - it took 1.40 so I think I'm on target. Still not sure I can believe it is nearly here though.
