Half marathon - any one doing one?

Cherryminx · 31/12/2015 16:25

There was a thread last year which I looked at in admiration as I struggled through C25K and then went on to run a 10K. So I can hardly believe that in a fit of madness I've signed up for a half Marathon in May.

Training starts tomorrow! Would anyone like to join me?

Hello all, can I join? I got a ballot place in the Royal Parks HM in October so have dusted off my trainers. I am about 1 1/2 stone heavier than the last one 3 years ago shockingly enough. So its running and cutting back on treats a lot. I'm always the fattest in my parkrun line crossing group and I have had enough of that! Dreaming of floating along like a leaf on the breeze

I did a 10 mile race today and it was better than expected so thinking I can make it. Would be nice t look at the sights rather than just concentrating on staying alive. They didn't like my e mail address so all the reminders go to DH, he can delete them on my behalf right? Grin

chutneypig · 26/06/2016 16:59

Fantastic achievement Fifty well done! When is the Royal Parks?

FiftyNineOhEight · 26/06/2016 17:55

Welcome Dinocroc we can be training buddies Smile

chutney it's in October, not exactly sure when. My new friend from today is also doing it so we are going to try to meet up for a recce or two beforehand.

Dinocroc · 26/06/2016 18:36

thanks 5908. can't do the bold thing sorry ! Yes. they have training plans that have already started worryingly enough. We can inspire each other It's October 9th which feels like a long way away but will creep up soon right.

I'm going to start running and hope that one day I will see my 11 year old in the distance at a parkrun - as soon as he could run without me he left me for dead Grin

Cherryminx · 26/06/2016 21:22

Well done 5908 - that sounds like hard work especially as is so hot and sweaty atm.

igotta - good luck with the tri.

Looks like quite a few going for autumn halfs so lets all get going soon

Welcome Dinocroc - I missed your post while I was typing. Ten miles today sounds like you're well on track. I cannot wait until my children are 11. I've made them both cry at parkrun because I'm so slow. DS hates running with me unless he thinks he's pacing me but he's a hard taskmaster Grin. He cried because he was so embarrassed to be near the back. DD cried because I overtook her once (she was running with DH) and she thought it meant she was really slow. She wasn't, for once I wasn't doing too badly Grin

The great thing about running is new friends Fifty, sounds fab.

Dinocroc · 27/06/2016 21:35

Lordy my legs hurt today. Watching England perform terribly and they haven't the energy to drag me away from the screen.....
I will catch the 11 year old one day. I may need a bike...

chutneypig · 28/06/2016 06:59

I'm not sure a bike would help me Dinocroc. I discovered at the weekend that I actually cycle as fast as I run. Ah well Grin.

Big push on the training this week. Speed session yesterday, Insanity and Pilates class today. Think I'll stick inside, this weather is dreadful for getting out much. Grump.

emummy · 28/06/2016 11:41

Glen Coe training started! Straight in with 8 miles, including 6 mile tempo run, wasn't sure I could do it but in the end it was fine and I got quite a good pace going - for me anyway! Cooler today, light rain, which helped.

chutneypig · 28/06/2016 19:13

Brilliant emummy - six mile tempo is amazing. Any tricks to keeping yourself going in the middle of it?

emummy · 28/06/2016 21:40

Not really chutney, I was listening to a Woman's hour podcast, which helped distract me. Plus it was little bit easier than I thought it would me, maybe I am actually getting faster!

Dinocroc · 29/06/2016 10:05

Right then yesterday's 4.5 mile run will be today now I can walk up and down stairs again . I'm always confused at 'tempo run'. It says breathless and not chatty right ?All my runs are like that Hmm

emummy · 29/06/2016 11:15

Mine too Dinocroc! I was surprised to be able to go faster, but I think I do a lot of my runs at the same steady pace when ideally you are supposed to mix up the pace a bit. Not sure how I feel about repeating it every week until October!

Dinocroc · 29/06/2016 19:48

Yes indeed emummy , it's a long way to October.... I managed 3 miles, cunningly shifting the 4.5mile one to later in the week. Am trying to eat less junk but that used to be my reward for a run. the reward will have to be a feeling of smug self righteousness right ? Grin

FiftyNineOhEight · 29/06/2016 21:31

Evening all.

You sound like you are doing well with your training emummy. Well done!

I survived a slow and chatty 4.25 miles with a friend this evening Smile.

FiftyNineOhEight · 29/06/2016 21:33

Yes Dino, that post-running smug feeling is good isn't it Grin

Cherryminx · 29/06/2016 21:43

Emummy I've said it before I'm sure - respect! Seems like things are hotting up here so enough is enough for my post HM/ post Brexit inaction. Here's the plan for me:

Weekend of hopefully lazing about in sunshine at local music festival. Race for Life with DD on Sunday. Then training starts Monday with a 4 mile steady.

Planning on doing the same plan as last time but with added core strength excercises in the mix - better hunt out my big saucepan / kettlebel subsittute.

chutneypig · 30/06/2016 06:12

Grin about breathless and not chatty, Dinocroc. I know what you mean!

Some of the plans sound very complicated with % this and threshold that. I need to get to grips with it this time round. I still find the treadmill good for short speed intervals - done a couple of sessions this week and feel much better for it - but I'm sure the really benefit will be over longer distances. Maybe I need a new Garmin that will tell me how hard I'm pushing it Grin

How's DD feeling about Race for Life Cherry? Should be a good atmosphere.

JaggyThistleLovesArchie · 01/07/2016 13:44

Hello all, I have drifted off this thread (and from running!) for the last few weeks. I had a run of viruses that dd generously brought home from nursery. Nothing major but my running has been limited to the odd 5k. Getting back to it now. 10 miles done on Sunday (which was not nearly as horrific as I expected it to be), 5k on Wednesday and intervals on the treadmill at the gym yesterday. Hopefully another long run on Sunday. Plenty of time until the Glasgow half in October which is not helping my motivation!

How is everyone else getting on this week?

SvenandSven · 02/07/2016 12:00

Just got a Parkrun pb of 29.51Grin
I can finally say I can run a sub 30 5kSmile

emummy · 02/07/2016 17:56

Hurray sven, well done!

chutneypig · 02/07/2016 18:49

Wonderful Sven, bet you've been floating on air all day.

Dinocroc · 03/07/2016 12:33

Well done Sven! That's a nice PB. I haven't had a park run PB for about three years Sad. I'm thinking I'm now too old and slow to hit the heady heights of just under 26 minutes ever again.
Just had a giant fry up and waiting for it to go down before a five mile run. Thats feeling like a long way from my current position on the sofa Grin

chutneypig · 03/07/2016 13:26

How was RfL Cherry? I loved Pretty Muddy yesterday, keen to try more in that line.

Sounds very sensible to wait for the fry up to go down Dinocroc!

I'm feeling very motivated - just had the 12 week warning email for my HM with some training plans. I was going to stick with the one I used last time but I think I'll give this one a go. It's got very specific advice for how fast the fast bits should be compared to the time I want to get. The whole plan is tailored for 2-2.30 too. And at least I know what I can do from the last one. 2.21 last time so I'm aiming for 2.10. Hopefully

It doesn't look too hideously onerous either. Three runs a week and a conditioning class, which I always do so can tick that one off Grin

I'd love to get under 28 at parkrun while I'm at it. Probably a bit optimistic Grin

londonmummy1966 · 03/07/2016 17:18

Hello can I join this thread - I'm training for the Royal Parks in October and could do with some friendly voices to help me through the plans. I've got some plans from the organisers but not sure if they are going to work for me. IS anyone else in this boat?
