Half marathon - any one doing one?

There was a thread last year which I looked at in admiration as I struggled through C25K and then went on to run a 10K. So I can hardly believe that in a fit of madness I've signed up for a half Marathon in May.

Training starts tomorrow! Would anyone like to join me?

Glad to hear your foot is feeling better Jaggy. How's the carb loading going?

The National Trust running group sounds great Cherry. What did you think of your new shoes?

Naice I went down the jelly baby route following advice on here and that worked for me. Which reminds me, need to stock up before the Race for Life for the DC.

I could do with losing a bit more running. Also post baby but no excuse as they're too old for that. I was doing quite well but have stalled a bit, aiming to focus a bit after a 10k next weekend. No idea what it feels like to run lighter but I plan to find out!

10k trail race for me tomorrow, at a NT place. Really looking forward to that.

Runningupthathill82 · 27/05/2016 09:33

I probably don't have an excuse either, chutney - I'm hanging onto this extra stone for far too long. It definitely came off easier first time round!

Have never done one of the NT trail races, but have heard good things about the one near us. Hope yours goes well - are you aiming for a time?

Cherryminx · 27/05/2016 12:27

Back from a lovely sunny run in the woods. Did about 4 miles with a coffee and a chat at the end. I've done my local NT 10k a couple of times. In fact it was my first ever 10k and really nice as its just turn up and go.

I don't need to lose any weight but have found that running has made me eat better - more likely to fill up on a big meal that stuff myself with crisps and snacks.

I definitely need to lose weight, I'm about a stone heavier than when I had DS and having DD hasn't helped! There are bits that wobble that never used to. My problem is that I eat too much. And training just increases my appetite (and I justify eating because I've exercised so much) but running doesn't seem to burn that many calories Confused. I should try to diet cause I would probably do much better times. running it sounds like you're doing brilliantly for someone with 2 small kids.

Liking the sound of the national trust trail runs, not sure there's anything near me though.

Going to run tonight, need to get out a bit more so I don't lose too much fitness!

Runningupthathill82 · 27/05/2016 16:36

Thanks, iGotta I'm doing ok, in that I'm bang in the middle of a healthy BMI, but I'm still a stone off my "racing" weight IYSWIM. Running is definitely easier without huge boobs and a mum tum to lug around.

Today's been a gorgeous day for training. I did a trail run through the woods anchor nicely muddy. Currently debating with DH as to whose turn it is to Parkrun tomorrow. Hopefully mine....!

Hello runners, I thought I had posted last weekend to say I had managed a 6 mile run without my foot hurting any more than it has been doing. I was slow and puffy though, I feel as though I have gained some weight with this enforced rest. I know that running doesn't use as many calories as you might think, but i think it does raise your metabolic rate for a little while afterwards, and every little helps Smile.

Since Sunday I did another 6 ish with friends (very slowly, we talked all the way round), and did 3.5 today. I have noticed that I'm throwing my foot inwards instead of landing on it straight, so am trying to concentrate on getting my gait back to normal. I registered for the local marathon-in-a-weekend this week and my numbers arrived today Shock

Jaggy best wishes for Sunday. I don't know if she still does it, but my aunt used to be one of the volunteer masseurs at the finish.

Who was it on the last page who was near the Huddersfield HM? I'm looking for a parkrun close to the A1 in that kind of neck of the woods next weekend Smile

chutneypig · 27/05/2016 17:18

I'm aiming for under an hour running. My last 10k was 1:00:00. Couldn't have done it if I'd tried. It was quite hilly too so I'm hopeful about this one. It's a Rat Race I think. Looking forward to it and hope you win the parkrun debate. The usual one in our house is who gets to run with DH, more who avoids running with me.

I'm jealous of your sunny run in the woods Cherry, hoping for that tomorrow!

I'd like to lose a stone too Igotta but would be pleased with half. Twins were a bit hard on my stomach!

Sounds very promising Fifty. It's always exciting when numbers arrive.

Runningupthathill82 · 27/05/2016 17:19

It was me! I saw your parkrun post, but haven't done Pontefract or Wakey I'm afraid. I've run three of the different parkruns in Sheffield, plus Huddersfield and Halifax, but possibly all a bit far from the a1 for you?

Of that lot, Huddersfield and Sheffield Hallam are the flattest, Sheffield Graves the most interesting (goes through an animal farm!) and Halifax is the hilliest.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 27/05/2016 18:52

I'm not a million miles from Huddersfield fifty. Did consider the HM very briefly but it looks very hard! Which park run are you doing?

FiftyNineOhEight · 27/05/2016 20:54

Running I have been to Sheffield Hallam parkrun. Graves sounds fun, I will get DS1 to take me there next time I visit him Smile as it's not far from where he lives atm (but I think Hallam will be closer when he moves out of halls into his rented house on Eccy Road in mid-June).

I could go up the M1 instead of the A1 I suppose. Anything for parkrun Grin

Igotta I'm heading north next Saturday and was trying to work out if I could stop off for a parkrun on the way, so was looking for somewhere close to the A1, north of Peterborough and south of Wetherby Smile

chutneypig · 27/05/2016 21:42

Belton House near Grantham isn't too far from the A1. National Trust house. I've not done the parkrun there but know it well, would be lovely I'm sure.

emummy · 29/05/2016 06:29

Good luck today jaggy, hope it goes well and you enjoy the day.

Runningupthathill82 · 29/05/2016 06:51

Good luck jaggy!

Did you find a parkrun, fiftynine? I did OK at ours, but still nowhere near my pre-baby times.

chutneypig · 29/05/2016 07:29

Good luck jaggy. Enjoy it and we're here waiting to hear all about it!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 29/05/2016 07:35

Good luck jaggy hope it goes well. Looking forward to hearing all about it.

FiftyNineOhEight · 29/05/2016 10:00

Best of luck jaggy, looking forward to hearing all about it!

running I think if I do one at all it will be Pontefract. That gets me close enough to where I need to be in good time for everything else I need to do next Saturday, but the trade-off is a really early start. I will decide towards the end of the week Smile

JaggyThistleLovesArchie · 29/05/2016 18:56

Thanks all. I made it round in 1 hr 52 mins so pretty chuffed with my time, especially as I was feeling unwell on Friday and Saturday. Really enjoyed it and managed to lift my pace to just under 8 minutes for my last couple of miles - it was nice to run past lots of folks just near the finish!
Have signed up for Glasgow on 2 October so will see if I can go faster then.

Paulat2112 · 29/05/2016 19:06

I have signed up to to Glasgow half at start of October. I literally have done no training for several years (had several kids via c section, broken my ankle had an op on it and have metal plate, damaged the ligaments in my knee on the other side etc) and started running again this week. Has been hard but i am looking forward to having a goal and something to work towards to get my fitness back up. I'm more into weights than cardio so it's been a tough week lol. Hope you all don't mind me joining in :)

FiftyNineOhEight · 29/05/2016 20:30

Well done Jaggy, especially putting on the gas at the end! Amazing time! Star

Welcome Paulat2112, good to have you along

emummy · 29/05/2016 21:33

Brilliant jaggy, well done!
Welcome Paula. Good luck with the training. I was debating Glasgow vs Glen Coe half, have gone for Glen Coe. Have heard the Glasgow one is really good with great support.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 31/05/2016 09:39

Well done jaggy cracking time!

Hello paula, you've loads of time to train, hope you're knees, ankles etc don't complain too much!

fifty I really need to see what all the park run fuss is about! My nearest ones are both about half an hour away.

Lonoxo · 31/05/2016 16:52

Well done Jaggy! And you have signed up for another one already, wow.

Welcome Paula! Really looking forward to hearing how your training goes.

I'm now on 10k for my long run and I have kept at this distance for a few weeks now. Psychologically, it's great as I've reached the half way point and prior to this, the only time I've ran 10k was in my 10k race in 2013. I've signed up for a 10k race in a couple of weeks time.

I have dropped one of my mid week 5k runs and trying to do intervals instead. I'm not quite getting the hang of it yet, always set off too fast so I don't finish the km.

Weather's not great this week but it's been lovely the past couple of weeks. Does anyone have sports sunglasses for running? I have been using my everyday tortoiseshell sunnies during running but wonder if I should invest in some sports shades?

Runningupthathill82 · 31/05/2016 18:26

I've got some basic sports sunglasses from Decathlon, which are great. That said, last time I ran a marathon I forgot them and as it was July and searingly hot and sunny I didn't want to go without. Did the thing in huge tortoiseshell shades Blush

chutneypig · 31/05/2016 20:15

Fabulous Jaggy that is super brilliant. How are you feeling a couple of days on?

Welcome Paula - having a goal is great.

Have you got access to a treadmill Loxono? I struggle with intervals without the fear of flying off the treadmill. Hills have been helping a lot. That race soon sounds great at this stage.

stilllearnin · 01/06/2016 12:23

Hello - can I join you? I have come over from the general running thread. I am thinking of signing up to a HM for the autumn and I have never run this distance before. I've just got up to 10 miles and having an easier week.

I am thinking of the Great Birmingham Run - I know it'll be massive and hectic but might be fun...and there is a mile long hill at mile 10 that I like the sound of!

Anyone done that one?

Chutney do you mean the hills are helping with fitness? I am just realising that what I thought were hills are actually small inclines! Just worked out a 10 mile route from my door with a longish incline. Saving it for next week.
