Protein Powder?

DD has been advised to have some protein shakes (3x 20g a day - am, pm & after her busiest/hardest class)

So we bought some 'Optimum Nutrition Lean Whey'

& the blasted child doesn't like it - it's not chocolatey enough in water & too chocolatey for adding to her smoothies (despite the spinach!! yuk!!)

So can she add it to milk & add more milkshake powder to make it chocolateyer & what should I buy next time that is a better flavour?

I think you make a good point Maryz If memory serves me you're in Ireland and the rugby authorities there seem more willing than most to warn against protein supplements. It's becoming a big problem for young people. I've even read that it's suspected there are steroids in some supplements. A decent amount of protein in the diet should be more than sufficient for most children.

Well condensed milk & a banana solved the taste issue - but I'm not sure if we will buy any more when this bag runs out as after March she will only wear her retainer at night & she can return to eating all day long the way she has done before. I think it's going to be a tricky term but will ease off later in the year.

She was asked to use it by the (NHS) physio as she has had several injuries this term and he wants her muscles to get all the help they can alongside massage & specific exercises. If she has to have 5 or 6 20g portions of protein each day I doubt she can manage it on food alone right now.

But it's only one term and things will change then back to normal

Maryz I've done the best I can for the next 3 months - when the retainer is off she will go back to eating between classes I promise (she prefers food)

But the need to up her protein has come at a bad time for eating & we have spent more than 2 years of her teeth to ignore it now

She needs to get through to Easter then we can reassess and make new & hopefully better decisions

& she will be having it in the 15 minutes between one class & the next - straight after high impact exhausting exercise

The dinner, (& lunch & breakfast) are less of a problem than the betweens

She can't eat enough to maintain her weight on just 3 meals & there won't be time between classes to eat with the retainer, a pint of milkshake may have enough protein to fulfill his requirements but I can't see her managing to have 2 or 3 pints a day

Maybe there's a dietician on MN who can help - I'll put a thread in health (I guess) & see
