What breakfast for parkrun please?

Apologies if this has been done in the parkrun threads.

I need to leave the house at 8.45 ideally to get to our local parkrun
and invariably I end up having breakfast a bit too late. This morning DH kindly cooked me my favourite of poached egg on toast with smoked salmon, but as I wolfed it down at about 8.40, I ended up feeling a bit sick on the run. I'm wondering if I should cut back to a banana if I don't wake up early enough to have brekkie at 8.

So parkrunners and general 5kers - what's your breakfast of choice and what time do you eat beforehand?

I just have a cereal bar or banana if I'm in a rush. Smoked salmon would have me puking if I ran soon after.

MelanieCheeks · 31/10/2015 17:45

It's perfectly possible to run 5k without breakfast! Though my cup of tea is non negotiable. Experiment a bit and see what your body does best on-I like one slice of toasted burgen bread with either marmite and cottage cheese, or peanut butter and fresh raspberries ( or jam. I'm not proud).
But I have to have that at least an hour before running.

Redcrayons · 31/10/2015 17:59

I have porridge with a banana, but eat about an hour beforehand. And lots and lots of water

rookiemere · 31/10/2015 18:03

I don't think I could run it on an empty stomach melaniecheeks - have tried running before without breakfast for shorter distances, but I always feel v.sick and lacking in energy.

Yes smoked salmon not ideal so close before parkrun - DH had kindly made me breakfast so I didn't want to burst his bubble. I'll either get up earlier or try going down the banana route I think.

You ate breakfast 20 mins before a run?! No wonder you felt sick! If I run first thing in the morning I eat either a toasted thin bagel with butter, or one slice of wholemeal toast with butter and jam, with a cup of tea. Sometimes I have a small glass of water if I'm feeling thirsty but not too much because there's nothing worse than feeling liquid sloshing round in your stomach as you run. Ideally I prefer to eat 2 hours before a run - even 90 mins before is cutting it fine for me, otherwise I feel really nauseous while running. I then eat again when I get back. A banana is a good alternative if you get up late.

megletthesecond · 31/10/2015 18:16

We eat by 7:30 on parkrun-day, leave at 8:25.

I have sugary porridge with tea and 8yo ds has sugary cereal.

He learnt a lesson scoffing a muffin at 8:30 once (told not to and ignored me). Stitch all the way round the course.

feckitall · 31/10/2015 18:16

I eat a smallish bowl of porridge and then poached eggs on plain toast before running..

cashewnutty · 31/10/2015 18:18

DH gets up early and eats 2 hours before Parkrun. He has muesli and fruit. His times are great!

thenightsky · 31/10/2015 18:21

I rarely eat breakfast before Parkrun. Cup of tea at 8am and out of the house at 8.25.

It's only 5k. Take a banana for after the run if you really can't last til you get home.

I only eat breakfast if it's a 10k or more and even then it has to be 2 hours before the run starts or it's coming up in my throat as I run.

rookiemere · 31/10/2015 18:26

It wasn't 20 mins before the run softkitty - it starts at 9.30 so it was 50 mins before, but still probably too close.

Megle - DH and DS once scoffed huge burgers 15 mins before a 2.5k children's run, then blamed their stiches on me forcing them to drink too much water because it was an extremely hot day Hmm.

Ok so porridge if I manage to eat it before 8.30 or banana if I don't sounds like the way to go, as I really don't fancy getting up for 7.30 at the weekend.

A banana and a bit of water. Possibly a sugary drink instead. I'm not great on empty, but have a very fussy digestive system.

I'm normally at a circuits class rather than Parkrun at that time slot, and too much water gets me rushing to the loo repeatedly from all the jolting around.

rookiemere · 31/10/2015 18:33

Actually thinking about it funnily enough I do metafit on Friday at 9.00 and have my poached egg, smoked salmon ( it's only a wee bit) combo at 7.40 and usually feel ok at that.

I do work a lot harder at parkrun though.

I don't usually eat breakfast at all, but if I am running then I do.

If it's (say) a 10k starting at 10am, I'll get up early and eat scrambled eggs and a big cup of herbal tea at about 7am.

For parkrun at 9am, I'll usually force down a banana and a drink about 7.30 if poss. I need to make sure I don't need the loo on the run IYKWIM.

Doing a muddy cross country tomorrow and need to leave about 9am so it's early up and protein + carbs :)

rookiemere · 31/10/2015 18:40

We have good loos at our parkrun clary, which does help if I've made a less than ideal breakfast choice or rushed out too quickly from the house Blush.

What is parkrun?

rookiemere · 31/10/2015 18:45

Sadly not my waistline or my weight - but makes Saturday just that little bit more special and DS has done a few as well - but he's too fast for me now so we need someone else to run with him as under 11.

cashewnutty · 31/10/2015 18:46

DH's breakfast must be good. He was 12th out of 185 runners - and he is 52!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/10/2015 18:47

A banana - an hour earlier

Altbough I was disappointly slow today - no pb, boo. A

rookiemere · 31/10/2015 18:47

If only breakfast was the only determining factor cashewnutty Grin

Redcrayons · 31/10/2015 18:50

Cashew nutty - so all round to yours for breakie next Saturday then?

cashewnutty · 31/10/2015 18:50

rookie I get that. Running is so not my thing!

cashewnutty · 31/10/2015 18:51

I am only reporting what DH just told me. Grin

lastqueenofscotland · 31/10/2015 18:53

I don't eat breakfast before running. If I'm running 16 miles plus or racing half marathons I'll have a flapjack and take a sports drink and a handful if jelly babies with me to keep me going. If I eat more than a mouthful id be sick. I need to leave about 5 hours between eating and running.

rookiemere · 31/10/2015 18:53

Ideally I need to shave off about 8 mins so I can match DS's sub 25 mins.

He's only 9 so he's not allowed to run on his own, but I'm too slow so he can only do it when we can borrow other parents or friends to run with him.

OP posts:
clary · 31/10/2015 18:59

Impressive by yr DS rookie! My DS is 12 thank goodness so he can run on his own, which is just as well as he is about 5 mins faster than me.

He really wants to win Hmm so funny watching him (he is small for his age) chasing down all these big young men Grin
