Edinburgh marathon

I am considering applying for the Edinburgh marathon. I am a slow half marathon walk jog kind of person. 3.25 hours for a half. I know I'd need to get better and slimmer to cope with a marathon. What are your experiences of this run? As I'll be near the back does the atmosphere lessen?

Sorry, I've not done the marathon, although a friend has and enjoyed it. I did the half this year, which is earlier in the morning and the support along the route was excellent, including children with handmade signs, and houses where they put their speakers in the window and blasted out music! It's a good course for a first one I think, with a shortage of hills.

Thanks very much. I've been hearing bad things about the finish and the disorganisation of getting a bus back to the centre at the end.

At the end you can either catch the official bus, which I think can be a wait or get one of the regular buses, I understand some people do that. If you search on the runners world uk website, I think there have been discussions about it on there. We walked up to the train station and met my brother who lived nearby, so didn't do the official transport. The baggage reclaim was a bit crazy, patience is needed!

I've done the relay twice and 2 half marathons. The atmosphere was fab all the way along in my experience (one good pace, one not very good at all!) Yes, its all a bit mad at the end but that's kind of to be expected. Lots of buses / trains back to town which are busy but I've always managed to get a seat. And you can go to Luca's and get a celebratory icecream after! I'm definitely signing up for next year! (if I can find my running shoes....)

I would check the cutoff before signing up - make sure that you have minimum 7 hours and preferably closer to 8 to finish if you are around 3:25 for a half.

Apart from that - most people I know who have done Edinburgh have been pretty happy with it.

Thanks. TriJo - I think with 7-8 months to go I think I'd be on with the cut off time.
