BMI

I know BMI can be a bit controversial, good for populations, but not always right for individuals. I'm trying to figure out how much more weight I want to lose. I'm down about 4 stone so far, and based on BMI, I need to go another 1.5 stone before I get back to a healthy bmi. But, I was talking to my gym instructor last night and he got very cross with me. Apparently because I train regularly (I go to 3-4 cross training bootcamps a week, and run approx 5km 2-3 times per week) including weight training (eg last night included olympic deadlifts at 50kg) that BMI is no longer relevant. He offered to do a calliper pinch test instead to get a better idea about what my body fat % is.

I'm a size 10 (or 8 or 12) and although I definitely have a good bit of weight around my tummy and thighs, I'm starting to get a bit gaunt around my face/neck/upper ribs so I'm very confused to have a BMI of 29.

BMI is a proxy for body fat.

Body fat is the more important health measure.
but its less easy to measure

see what comes out of your instructor's tests

also, what is your waist / height ratio - it being a measure of visceral fat

I'm getting the callipers test done next week, so we'll see what comes of it. I've just checked a waist to hip ratio, which is coming in under 0.8 which is apparently good (according to this randomly googled site). Height to waist is 50, with the upper limit of normal being 49. Thanks, I didn't know about that assessment tool.
