Can I get fit using an exercise bike

Doing ten miles a day? It sounds like a stupid question but ATM I do nothing and so I thought this was quite good but my DSis has just said that ten mikes on an exercise bike is nothing and won't have much of an impact.

Is this right?

10 miles a day instead of nothing seems a fine place to start, and we all have to start somewhere. When you can do that, push on, or ride outside. I wonder if there's a cycling equivalent to C25k?

Do you mean a stationary bike? It's not nothing at all, in fact it's a huge amount more work than 10 miles on the road because you can't freewheel.

You could also try High Intensity Intermittent Training - HIIT. Google for different programmes. It's a lot less time intensive than a long session, and is fantastic for building fitness. I do this on my stationary bike and I really feel the benefit.

If you push yourself - then it will make a significant difference.

Have a look at stuff like the Sufferfest videos that you download to your phone/tablet and do on a stationary bike. If you do them and push it you'll drip sweat all over the floor and they definitely make a big difference.

If you slowly push the pedals around on a light resistance whilst you faff on Facebook in the manner of some people in my gym, your fitness gains will be more limited.
