Cyclists who also run - how did you prepare your body for running to avoid injury?

Hi,

As per my previous thread, I cycle to work but also want to take up running. First time I went running (v slowly, just a gentle jog), I managed to strain my hamstring. My friend says it's because although I'm quite fit, I've never run before and it's a different set of muscles getting exercised. I also wore my Converse trainers as I had no proper running shoes - I got told off for doing that.

I really want to get into running, what advice have you got for me?

Get fitted for proper running shoes immediately. By far the best way to avoid injury in my experience. Go to a proper running shop and they will put you on a treadmill, analyse your gait and recommend what suits. They usually let you return them if not suitable as long as they haven't been worn outside.

You strained your hamstring because you were running in converse which have no cushioning or support (which might be OK if you had v good running form and had worked studiously to being a barefoot runner). Get fitted for some running shoes, then start with C25K so you slowly get your body used to the impact.

I run and cycle (and swim) and they really do complement each other

Thanks! I have no idea, have I...

I've been reading about c25kand I should probably follow it, even if my fitness level is reasonably decent. The hamstring strain has really highlighted the importance of taking things easy - and having decent running shoes'
