I wish I could run...and ideas what I could do instead?

I have fatty lumps in my legs which make walking/running over 3mph very painful. My legs tighten up and I cannot go any further. Its usually about 7 minutes before they start hurting, then I need about 10 for them to stop, if I push too much they hurt for a few days.
So I want an alternative as simply walking is doing nothing for me (I walk the dog as fast as I can without pain) I'm not brave enough to go to the gym, or classes of any sort, so what is left? Its mainly my tummy I want to lose on, but realise you cannot choose where you lose weight.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Resistance bands exercises. I think that you can get DVDs with the bands too. Or - if you have Sky - there are a few channels with resistance training for women on

Swimming, nordic skiing, power walking?

But I find that exercise does;t really make me lose weight, only diet. Exercise makes me fitter, stronger and more toned though.

Does cycling make them hurt? Thats a good way to work hard without impact.

Or swimming hard does really tone you - but obv if you want to lose weight, as Bikerunski says its all about diet

I've not cycled since I was about 15! I was thinking of it, but don't want to fork out for a bike just incase they do (don't know anyone with one) I was wondering if running on a treadmill would hurt, but again don't want to fork out for the gym. I class swimming in the same league aß the gym, need confidence to go.
I was thinking of asking the doctor about getting them removed, but dunno if they will. I think I would be ok at jogging as I don't get out of breath in the time before they start to hurt.

Are you doing too much too soon? It's important when you start running, to build up very slowly, even if your heart and mind are willing to do more.

Try walk a run a minute/walk a minute for a week and then move to 2 minutes run?

I don't know anything about your specific complaint though, but it does sound like the doctor should be able to help, if there's an operation that could remove them.

Theres quite a lot of bike hire places around - often Forestry Commission places have a hire shop, or bike trails (like the Camel trail in Cornwall, Stratford greenway), then you could try cycling for no investment and theres loads of people hiring who haven't cycled for yonks, so not intimidating.

I'm in the NorthEast, the closest forestry commision with bike hire is 1.5 hours away. Can't see any bike hire shops on google either, but that would have been a great idea.

GottaFeeling, I don't think I'm overdoing it. I mean I walk the dog for about 50 mins (do almost 3 miles) but no matter where in the trail I am I cannot walk that little bit faster. You'd think I'd be able to after walking that all the time? Going to ring the doctors on Monday to get an appointment, though not holding my breath, they're not particularly helpful and usually just trot out the line "come back if it gets worse".

A few years ago I felt a lump in my breast and put off going for ages, finally plucked up the courage and they said that ^^ I said if I walk out the door without a referral to the hospital, I won't be back. (Luckily it was a fatty lump! I seem to be a fatty lump carrier)
