Running in the sun/warm

Hello. I'm after some ideas for clothes for running in the sun. I'm in the north east so you wouldn't think this would be much of an issue but I loathe getting really hot when I run, I really struggle with sunny runs. Stupid, I know, they're supposed to be lovely runs.

So what I'm looking for are recommendations for really cool tops and bottoms. Probably capris for bottom, though possibly shorts as I guess these will be cooler. And obviously short sleeve tops. But what fabrics, styles etc work for you in the warm?

What other strategies do you have? Obviously running first thing or in the evening. But I even find that when it's actually cold but sunny I struggle too, especially when the sun's shining right at me. Maybe I should try to find a shadier route...

Thank you!

I just wear my normal running attire and adjust to weather...
Mine are mostly ELLE sport or USA pro...
Supportive bra top (ran in just that last wk, hot and on home stretch had to strip down!)
Vest or top
Tights, capris or shorts

I run in shorts with pockets & stuff my gloves in there (with phone anyway).
I usually start out very cold so wear 1+ old long sleeve shirt(s) I can take off & wrap around waist, & sometimes I can leave it somewhere obvious on the run & pick it up on way home.

If you're starting your run like this then I can only suggest that you tie up your shirt a bit or tie up & soak your hair in cold water before starting out, that will keep you cool, too.

I wear sleeveless tops often with built in bra support - one less layer! I wear cropped leggings rather than shorts as I find them cooler and if my thighs get sweaty (ugh sorry) they don't rub.

I avoid cotton and wear that material that exercise clothes are made out of that wicks sweat away from the skin(is it a polyester/nylon/Lycra mix?).

I feel your pain! Time of definitely makes a difference. Capri legging things and vest-just normal wicking fabric. A light coloured baseball cap has really helped, one with mesh panel at the top.

I wear Nike Miler short sleeve tops and Capri tights. In the real heat I might wear a vest top. I have never found decent shorts. I have a couple of 'sports' which are alright but a bit big so I avoid wearing them

The Nike tops wash well and seem indestructible. I've got some that are 5 years old.

You will adjust to the warmth over the next few weeks but it's important to adjust your pace a bit when it really heats up and obviously try and avoid the heat of the day. Running near water can be a bit cooler. I do really struggle in the summer heat; I take plenty of fluids and run slower. I also tend to scale back my mileage a bit and run more for a set time than distance because the heat saps my energy so much.

Good 'technical' fabrics (that does sound pretentious - the ones with good wicking) definitely help. I wear Ron Hill short sleeved tops and capri bottoms. They too seem to be indestructable. Normally I will inwardly moan when running in the heat, although last year I noticed that after a few sunny runs, my inward moaning seemed to decrease.

Can anyone recommend good running sandals or almost sandals (could be closed toed)? I hate having hot feet when exercising.

My neighbour jogs in jeans and a regular collared shirt (only 1-2 miles, mind). Works for her.

Genuine lycra is breathable, comfy & insulates when wet (reduces chill). Plus lightweight & 'looks good'. But simple cotton can do most same things for cheaper price.

I run in wet clothes if it's very hot, there are a couple of drinking fountains on my route and I stand under them as necessary

generally avoid the hottest part of the day of course

it's not at all stupid OP, being too hot when running is very unpleasant and makes it a whole lot more arduous, strategies for dealing with the heat are essential if you want to carry on running!

I think you are supposed to dress for temperature 10 degrees more than what you're running in. So check what temp is before you go out and adjust accordingly. Wear baseball cap - will catch sweat and keep sun off face.
You could always wet it before you go. I always go out pre 6 am because I find temps above 15 unbearable when running. Have you tried sunglasses for the glare? You can get some really cool running ones these days Smile

Thanks everyone. Lots of good ideas here and some brands/fabrics to follow up.

Searching for stuff I noticed that some capris/tops have mesh sections for more air flow - might try to find some of those.

Most of all it's the back (?) of my joints that get really hot and sweaty and uncomfortable so wrists, inner elbows, back of knees. Obviously the first two can be resolved with short sleeve/vest tops - and maybe I do need to brave slightly shorter shorts to 'air' my knees. The choice always seems to be just below the knee or v short though...
