I want to do parkrun in late May - help me get there please!

I did c25k a while ago but never fulfilled the parkrun ambitions Angry then winter arrived and I got lazy! The next spring I tried again - 2014 - but never completed the programme. So here I am again for attempt number 3. I went out yesterday for a slow run and lasted twenty minutes, but another lap of the block would probably have required some walking or hospitalization Grin

So I wonder if some running experts can advise? Do I start c25k again? Start it partway through? Increase speed first then distance, or build up time then speed or running? I would love to complete a parkrun I'm under 30mins next month which may be too ambitious but is a lovely thought !!

Start c25k again, but if you find it easy, just do two runs of each week until you start finding it hard.

Under 30min next month might be a stretch target though - but running it will happen. Don't be afraid to go to parkrun when you can run 15min, walk 2min, run 15min sort of thing

I'm restarting c25k after a poor winter. I thought I could skip lots out but have found it best just to slog through from the start. Have done 4 weeks now. Was never anywhere near 5k in under 30 so can't help with that!

workatemylife · 16/04/2015 07:59

Thank you . Not the answer I hoped for but very sensible advice that success is more likely if I train properly and don't rush at it. The first time I did c25k I ran through the early weeks more quickly and then followed the programme properly once it got hard. By the end the 5k in 30 was doable so here's hoping Wink I start today!

Why don't you just go straight to parkrun? My local only requests that if will take longer than 50 mins you advise them before hand.

I started it about a month ago and my first run was sub 40 but the really nice tail runners walked with me when I needed to slow down and walk. I don't really understand why you have to 'prep' for parkrun the point is to improve week on week surely?

CMOTDibbler · 16/04/2015 17:11

I think it depends on the Parkrun - ours is superfast with no tail runners, and at 34 minutes you are right at the back with the small children (I've been running with ds), so its pretty tough on your own until you can run a good chunk

mamapants · 16/04/2015 20:53

If you ran 20 minutes today I think it would be a waste of time starting couch to 5k again. It starts with 90 seconds of running.
I'm just doing it myself and I think you'd be best starting at week four or even five.
Am not sure you'll get the speed you want by the end of may but who knows.
I've never done parkrun but have looked at the results of my nearest one and there were about 20 people who took longer than 35 minutes, slowest was 55 so worth checking the results at yours to see if you would be comfortable running it.

I was all keen to do park run but then my sister said it can be a bit racy and not fun.

standingonlego · 17/04/2015 10:29

Come and join us on the parkrun thread Grin wips your sister is...well....let me put it politely...just wrong :)

standingonlego · 17/04/2015 10:30

It is a run not a race Grin

Plenty of well over 40 minute folk at my local, and lots of walk / run goes on. It is friendly, fun and supportive.

Sunseed · 17/04/2015 10:37

Just go straight to parkrun. My local is another with plenty of over 40 mins (including me quite often!) and the volunteers will always cheerfully stand out there until the tail-runner is home. It can be a bit racy at the front but I always start at the back where it is very friendly and supportive and lots of walk/run.

workatemylife · 18/04/2015 11:46

Thanks again. My local parkrun seems very welcoming and the main reason for wanting to go below thirty minutes is so that I could run with a couple of people that I know -and settle a score with a family member who thought I would never manage it Grin

I went out today and ran 2.5miles in 29minutes so I will certainly join you all on the parkrun thread and try to DO it this time! Week one of C25k maybe isn't the best starting point after all. But I need some more speed and distance clearly to fulfil the ambitions so some serious work ahead Smile

So OP...did you give it a whirl today? If not....how about next week Grin

Thetallestsunflower · 25/04/2015 22:42

I am looking to start park run too. Have been managing 5k in under 30 mins on thxe treadmill but I think it will be harder outside x

WipsGlitter · 26/04/2015 00:26

I really think standing it depends. She says the one she goes to the faster runners are flying past you.

workatemylife · 26/04/2015 08:08

Sunflower I seem to remember being told to set a slight incline on the treadmill to mimic the effort of outdoor running. Might be wrong though and your speed sounds good!

No parkrun for me this week - I was on a train yesterday morning Grin hoping to have a gentle run this evening at home after a lazy week.

It is parkrun Eve....you going to go in the morning? Just asking Wink

MrsMook · 02/05/2015 07:28

Intervals are a good way to improve speed.

RedCrayons · 02/05/2015 07:38

There's loads of people who walk all the way round the park run I've been to.
