Weightlifting newbie

I've been meaning to start weightlifting for a long while now. I recently lost 22 kg (~3.5 stone) by running and eating better, but I have never worked up the courage to walk over to the weights side of the gym.

So, inspired by sleepwhenidie's post I thought I'd ask you all where to start. I have so many questions but, I don't want to overload myself with info. I guess I just need instructions for a first set of exercises which I can repeat until I'm confident enough to branch out.

  • how long would a simple beginner's session take?
  • how do you you know if your weights are too heavy/light?
  • do you have any suggestions for a simple routine to start with - i.e. one I can commit to memory, so that I look like I know what I am doing?

To start I'd get a book. Then with time you'll be able to fund your own way. After the pregnancy I went back to weights with The Body sculpting Bible for Women.

Come post in the new weights room!

I don't agree with their diet plan ( I'm a low carber) but the exercises are good. There's sth fir the beginners, intermediate and advanced. I also find their training programmes too long (6 weeks) but for a newbie i'd say that's correct. Each exercise has a detailed description and photos.

Ah, it took my a while to find the new weights room board. I'll move this discussion over there then.
