Returning to running after injury

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice really. I've been running since Novemeber and have recently been running 3 times a week just under 5 miles each run.
Unfortunately last Wednesday I was reversed into by a car and really hurt my back, neck and shoulders. the pain is getting better now and my aim is to get back running hopefully Monday but I'm not really sure how I should get back into it.
There's a shorter run of 3.2 miles I do but that quite hilly, I don't want to push myself to much but also I'm desperate to get back running and back to normal Smile
Any advice would be great, thanks Smile

Poor you! If walking is OK, I would definitely start with a shorter run, and leave yourself enough time to take it slowly and walk the hills if necessary.

Good luck.

Hi thanks for your reply, I've been managing to walk the dog and have been building that up so that
Should be ok. Also that run I could cut short of needs be.
It just so difficult when you want to be back out the but feel scared because you don't know how your body is going to react Sad

Let us know how you get on Nells

how awful for you. I would try a shorter run, sensible to have a short cut if need be. The main rule I would follow is if it try, if it hurts stop and try later. Good luck

Hi, thanks. I'm going to try my shorter run tomorrow, I actually felt upto it today but think I'd rather have someone at home just in case!!! I feel a bit daft feeling so nervous about it but I'm sure I'll feel better once I'm out there Smile

Well done nells. If it makes you feel better I am attempting a bike ride with an injured shoulder. Its been physio'd and kinio taped up, we'll see how it holds up! Hope you also have a good session tomorrow

How did it go Nells?

You have my sympathies Nells - I'm now two months into my longest every layoff from running due to peroneal tendonitis, and I've been going stir crazy through not being able to run for so long.

I have just these past two weeks taken a few very tentative run/walk sessions, and like you was extremely nervous about how my injured ankle would react.

Although things have gone better than I hoped they would, I'm by no means out of the woods yet so will still take baby beginner steps for another couple of weeks.

I have been able to keep my CV fitness in check by cross training, cycling, lifting weights, etc... but nothing beats the joy of running for me. I shall keep reminding myself that I have my whole life to run, just in case I start thinking that I'm completely better and end up doing too much too soon, thus re-injuring myself.

My best advice would be one small step at a time - take it slow and steady, listen to what your body is telling you, and please don't be too disheartened if you feel as if you are a beginner all over again. It will come in time.

I wish you the best in your recovery - and fully understand your frustrations. You are not alone in this, believe me!

Hi thanks all, I've done 3 shorter runs now and am fine with the pain which is good Smile I feel really nervous when I'm around cars and crossing drives etc but that seems to lessen with each run!!!
I do feel like I'm never going to be at the fitness I was but I'm sure I will be in a few weeks Smile
I have sympathy with you
waycat I've had tendinitis before and it's so painful Sad I hope you recovery is fast and your back on the roads soon Smile
