Help. I'm currently up to 5k and looking to get to 10k by summer. I have one of those water bottles with the gap in the middle but I find it soooo hard to drink out of whilst running. What do you do? Is it mad to run 5k and not drink anything?

I could pretty happily run ten miles without a drink. But if you feel you need one, then take it. You could always stop for two seconds...

I don't take a drink for running anything up to and including 10k, which takes me an hour. I usually have half a pint of water before I start a 10k run, and then obviously drink when I finish.

You don't need to drink during that sort of distance, and should quite easily be able to train your body out of wanting to, but on the other hand, as the PP said, if you feel more comfortable drinking then stop and do so.

10 k should be doable without a drink, unless it's really hot

if you're thirsty, ie not just using the water to cool down, maybe you should be taking more water in by habit anyway?

i don't bother with water unless running ten miles plus. I agree, its not necessary

Great. Thanks. It just never entered my head not to bring a drink. I'm used to consuming loads in the gym. Smile

I run 7k and the odd 10k without a drink. I don't like to carry stuff. For the more experienced runners- what distance do you think you really have to drink?

JennyOnTheBlocks · 05/03/2015 21:05

i don't go on distance, but time on my feet, Celtic if i'm going to be out for over an hour, but under 90 mins, I probably won't bother

if it's over the 90 mins i'll take a drink and some shot bloks - take my first sips and block after 30 mins (i'm marathon training)

I curently run up to 13 miles, I take a small amount of water, not because I'm actually thirsty but because my mouth gets a bit dry and it's just soothing to have a mouthful of water every so often
