Post workout snacks

I run and lift weights, also do some circuit training. I'm looking for a decent post workout snack as my bacon roll post workout isn't helping with my weight loss! Should I be eating mainly protein after a workout or is it ok to chuck some carbs in there too?

The bloke who does the exercise classes I go to reckons high GI carbs are good after a workout. Chilli and rice is a good one after an evening workout - obviously not so great for breakfast!

LadyRivers · 02/03/2015 11:12

Honestly I'm so hungry after a workout I would eat that no matter the time of day! Might change it up to some cous cous and chicken for lunch after a morning workout.

protein shake and a banana. Especially if you're lifting!

LadyRivers · 02/03/2015 11:22

I did think about protein shakes! I'm a bit confused about them though, are they different from the slim fast ones?

I have a banana, some toast and a glass of milk. I'm not on a diet. A banana seems to hit the spot always - a bit sweet, filling and full of goodness.

By lunchtime I'm hungry but it's enough to keep me going.

In the morning I have eggs/beans/chorizo and a coffee or an egg white omelette with peppers and spinach/other veg and chorizo or ham and herbal tea post workout - the protein hit and the caffeine shot are good when I have to run to other things

JanineStHubbins · 02/03/2015 11:32

Sliced apple with peanut butter.

LadyRivers · 02/03/2015 11:34

These all sound great, thank you everyone!

Weight loss shakes are just full of sugar and crap. Whey protein will help with the micro tears in your muscles caused by lifting and help rebuild stronger and leaner!

I recommend Smart Tec or MyProtein. I am currently 30 weeks pg, but I was taking 2 scoops of Diet FX (which cotains green tea and tonalin CLA) with 240 ml water.

TalkinPeace · 02/03/2015 11:59

Unless you are very lean, why snack?
Why not just wait till your next normal meal time?

Snacks are not a good part of any healthy eating system

Showy · 02/03/2015 11:59

I find if I am hungry post workout, it's usually a hydration issue. Quite common for the wobbles of dehydration to be misinterpreted as hunger and you end up sabotaging your weight loss goals. So ensure adequate hydration before during and after exercise.

I don't diet so tbh eat what I fancy after exercise but do find that to satiate energy depletion and to aid recovery, protein works well. I have done 45 mins of high intensity circuits today, plus 20 minutes lifting heavy. I have had a 2 egg omelette with ham and a banana about half an hour later, plus a pint and a half of water over 45 minutes. I am not hungry at all.

Showy · 02/03/2015 12:01

Talkinpeace, if your healthy eating system is listening to your body and eating when hungry, then there is bog all wrong with snacking.

LingDiLong · 02/03/2015 12:17

Snacks are definitely part of my healthy eating system! Without them I really crave sugar and if I get too hungry I end up over-eating.

LadyRivers · 02/03/2015 12:44

I eat when I'm hungry - just want to make the right choices. I don't calorie count and still find I am making a steadyish loss while still snacking. I've upped my fluid intake as well I found that helped but still get hungry after a workout. Everyone is different though :).

LadyRivers, you sound like you're being sensible and following a healthy, sustainable way of exercising and eating. I don't calorie count either, eat when hungry, eat a balanced diet and exercise lots. I am fit, healthy and strong. Don't let people tell you that you MUST do x or HAVE TO do y. Other methods might work for other people but you sound like you've got it sussed for you. Smile

LingDiLong · 02/03/2015 13:01

I wish there was a like button for that post Showy!

LadyRivers · 02/03/2015 15:54

Agree Showy, there's not a one size fits all method when it comes to health.

And thanks for the recommendation Kato, will give them a try.
