Hip pain and running

Been running 5k x 3 a week for about 6 weeks now. It's got easier and my leg muscles have definitely got stronger.

Both of my hips have started to ache though, usually at night in bed. I run on road and my trainers are about 2 years old but good ones.

Anyone know how to deal with sore hips? I don't want to stop running now.

First, you need new trainers. Modern shoes have gel stuff that over time and distance erodes. Also, go to a proper running shop to buy new ones and get them to check your gait and make a recommendation accordingly.

Second, the chances are that you have slightly misaligned your hips/pelvis. At the very least, ice on the sore bits and the very lower back might help if there is some swelling you can't see. If it continues to hurt I would see a chiropractor, osteopath or physio who does actual manipulation and get them to check you over.

Final tip, start every run with a long brisk warm up walk. Boring, but will help to prevent further swelling and inflammation.

I have a lot of trouble with my hips too which has came on the last couple of years and don't know why, but if on my feet all day my hips can then ache all night and even the next day and if have some action in the bedroom Blush then my hips can get crampy and stiff quite quick and then it hurts and again will ache for ages afterwards which is not good at all! My right hip seems to make clunking noises when laying down and raise my knee up and then put my leg back down, so maybe I should look at seeing someone too like you suggested workingbling. Might be that mine need manipulating back into place too cuz shouldn't click and clunk so much surely Hmm

It's very possible that your IT bands are too tight and that causes hip pain (does it go away when seated and is worse when you stand up having been immobile for a bit?). Get a foam roller, roll them out and stretch them and you'll probably be fine.

Thanks for replies. It only seems to hurt when I m in bed at night. I don't seem to be able to lie on my side for very long without it aching. This is relatively recent. During the day is fine. They don't bother me at all. They don t bother me during running either but have got worse at night since I began running again. I don't want to give up running thoughHmm

Chancer - I would say that it only hurts in bed is a sign it hasn't got too bad yet. But I would put money on it getting worse. Ice the hips and lower back before bed and perhaps once or twice more a day for a week, do proper warm ups and if it's still happenig, see someone. Good luck.
