Does anyones child do cyclocross, and could give me some tips on how to prepare ds(8) for his first event?
There isn't a club locally, but there is an event being held nearby in December and he fancied giving it a try.
He's a very confident rider, and has cyclocross tyres on his bike, but neither dh or I have any experience of cyclocross and could do with some hints!

I don't know what it is but it conjures images of jumpcross on bicycles instead of ponies

Grin no jumps, cycle racing on grass/mud

Hello Cmot. I'm almost out of charge but will post some pointers later . uni boy is enjoying CX races this season and I'm almost an old hand at it now.

Cyclocross is great fun! Haven't raced though, I lack any competitive genes. Check out CX magazine, some race tips & videos on there www.cxmagazine.com/

Kids CX.
Cmot your lad is a year 4 isn't he? So he would race as an under 10. The CX age groups are determined by age on 1st sept and thus follow school years. Its common for multiple age groups to race at same time but results to get sorted out into age groups afterwards.
Races take place on mixed terrain. This can be anything from school playing fields with a bit of tarmac playground , to tussocky farmland , gravel tracks and woodland boggy bits. Courses can be as shirt as a few hundred metres or as long as a couple of miles. Kids tend to race on shorter circuits than adults.
The race format is normally x minutes plus 1 lap. So everyone rides round and round the course doing as many lap as they can in x minutes, when the leader of the race has done x minutes the plus 1 lap starts and a bell is rung to tell riders its their last lap. After the race leader finishes their plus 1 lap , each rider finishes as they cross the finish line. So some riders will not do as many laps as the race leader/s. Placement is done on number of laps completed followed by order over the finish line.

Riding skills - CX start lines and the early minutes of the race can be rather congested. Confidence riding close to other people is useful. Overtaking skills and also the ability to hold your line safely while being overtaken are useful. Its normal to shout right/ left at a rider you are about to overtake on their right/left. Some newbies get confused and move to their right / left when shouted at , causing frustration and sometimes crashes.
Mud- expect it.
Crashes- they happen.
Tell mini Cmot to pick himself up and get back on his bike and carry on racing.
Mechanical breakdown- you can't go backwards on course so keep running / walking in race direction with broken bike till finish line is reached. Officially no assistance from off course is allowed. Actually marshalls will give a kid a hand with a slipped chain etc.
As a parent its hard at the first few races to watch your kids disappear from view ....trusting that they will reappear later in the lap. But they generally do.

Thats really useful UniS, thank you! This event has a U8 and U10 class (as well as others), and he's y4, not 9 till next May.
He's fine riding close to others as we've been doing sportives and working on overtaking/ being overtaken etiquette, so he does shout 'coming on your left/right', and ride close together when out as a family to play at being a peleton.

We'll see how it goes - it isn't far (Top Barn Farm) and cheap, so no big commitment if he doesn't like it on the day.
