Tell me about bike carriers/racks please...

I need a bike carrier for my 2007 Clio as the bikes don't fit in the boot anymore, but i don't really know where to start.
I know i definitely don't want a roof mounted rack as i will never be able to reach to put the bikes on!
I have been looking at the rear mounted racks, particularly the high up ones as i think i would need a lighting board for the lower ones and i don't want to have to fiddle with electrics.
I need to carry 3 bikes ideally. Can anybody recommend anything please?

Also how sturdy are these racks? I make regular trips down to see DP who lives at the other end of the country and i'm worried about how secure the bikes will be while i'm on the motorways. I've seen a bike fall off a rack but if it was going to happen to anyone it would happen to me!
TIA Smile

Thanks for the reply, I was looking at the bones 3 but can't figure out if it sits high or low at the back as I'm trying to avoid a lighting board. I'll go down to go outdoors tomorrow and have a look Smile

Mine sits fairly high - a peugeot 207. I dont have a lighting board and I have travelled hundreds of miles with mine.

It is really so easy and quick to fit once you have it sussed - they helpfully have a video to assist. It isnt complicated, you just have to get the angles right.

Here's a link to the video. vimeo.com/11475018

Thanks elysian!
It looks very easy to use from the video and it looks like i could probably stick it as high or low as i want. They've got them for £100 at go outdoors with a discount card (only costs £5 for the card) so i'll go there tomorrow Smile

I had a Bones too and it was great, I did need a lighting board but it really wasn't a big deal so don't let that out you off.
I then changed cars and have a tow ball, Thule one that is also very good, apparently, the roof ones are the safest, followed by tow bar ones, followed by rear mounts like the Bones but the Bones is the best of those.
(I got all this from Jeremy Vine who helpfully had a long programme all about things flying off cars and causing accidents just as I set off from Cornwall for a 6 hour journey with my rack on the back - thanks Jez!

Thanks hilly
That's what worries me, i drive from Yorkshire down to Devon to see DP and i worry about them falling off but the bones looks quite safe.
I'll try and keep and open mind about the lighting board, hopefully the go outdoors people will be more helpful than the people in halfords.
