10km run in 6 weeks?

Please help! Back in April I stupidly signed up for a 10km run at the beginning of October. The view was that it would motivate me to get out there and actually get fit. If I'm honest I actually forgot about it until now. I have 6 weeks to train and am wondering if that really is as crazy and unrealistic as it sounds? I am a very beginner and realistically running 5k in 6 weeks would be a challenge in itself.

Please help me!! I know I should have done something sooner and am stupid so no need to point that out. Any tips/advice from runners would be fab and really appreciated. As much as it is a challenge and I'm massively under-prepared, I actually would like to complete it.

Thanks mners!

Where are you? You could see if you can find someone locally to run with. That's what im doing. I currently can run 2 miles but am building up slowly with 3 short runs a week.

I don't know anyone locally who would be willing to run with me! I don't know the best/safest way to build it up. Run as far as I can and just do a bit more each day? Run/walk for a set time? I don't want to do it wrong and injure myself!

There is a couch to 10 KM here , but it is a 12 week program.

How much basis fitness have you got?

Would walk a km, jog a km be a more realistic way to approach the 10km in October?

Thanks, will have a look. Yes I think I'm definitely going to have to walk part of it unless a miracle happens!

I would plan do it as a mix of walking and running from the start. I ended up do that for my first 10k a couple of years ago, I wasn't the only who did it.

It is better to run a bit the walk a bit from the outset than to run until you're knackered then walk. I did run 900 m then walk 100 m-ish but see what works for you before the day.

You need to get out running about 3-4 times a week for your body to get used to running. Its doable but you need to commit to it.

They say if you can run 4 miles without stopping you can run 6.

Just to add. Many people do the run/walk method during a 10k so don't feel a failure if you do that. Just enjoy the day!
