Can someone talk to me about running shoes? I'm a novice.

I have finally started C25K (proud). I have got some trainers but I think they are not going to be suitable for running. They just don't feel right. I feel the sole is too stiff and the shoe isn't wide enough across the toes.

I've just been reading up and am thoroughly confused between the highly padded/cushioned type and the minimalist/barefoot type (was looking at New Balance).

On reading, the minimalist type sound more logical and appealing.

I have a tendency to heel strike and get sore shins so am try to consciously change strike. On the rare occasion when I have run barefoot, I don't have sore shins.

We have a sweatshop nearby so I'll probably buy from there and get advice but interested in others thoughts and experiences.

Well done for starting C25K Smile

Whatever you have read, there is one thing you must do (and I can't stress the importance of this enough): Get your gait analysed and wear corresponding shoes.

This is very important, especially if you intend to go the minimalist route which often means little or no support. Skipping this first step will significantly increase your chances of injuries down the line (take it from one who's been there).

Great advice, thanks. Sweatshop do gait analysis.

I just want to be comfortable, minimise potential for injury and enjoy it. Current trainers fail on all 3 I think. Also need to get something to run in as yoga pants are too flappy. .

Karrimor is great for cheap run wear.

Get thee to a specialist running shop. A good pair if shoes will prevent injury. Also take their advice about how often to change your shoes.

I meant leggings and tops. For trainers I would always get my gait analysed.

Definately have a gait analysis. The shop will pressure you to buy shoes but have a look on the net.

I had a gait done at DW and ordered 6 pairs of support shoes from www.sportshoes.com. then wear then round the house, jog about indoors. Also order them a size bigger to avoid your toes rubbing.

Yy do the gait analysis thing at Sweatshop. It can take ages so go at a quiet time when you're not in a rush. Oh and wear a sports bra for the treadmill and running up and down the shop. (I forgot. Not pretty).
