Cycling with 1yr old - trailer or bike seat?

Hi

I have searched and found a few old threads, but I'd be interested in any current recommendations/thoughts please.

We want to take DD(1) out when we (DH, DS (6) & me) go cycling on local cycle paths.

It feels like a trailer would be safer as she is nearer the ground should the cyclist fall from the bike but maybe that isn't the case? DH is a good enough cyclist, but you never know etc.

What should we consider with a trailer?

Finally any recommendations? We have £150 worth of Amazon vouchers, so will be buying it from there.

TIA

My understanding is that a trailer is much safer, for various reasons:

  • less likely to fall over if your bike falls for whatever reason
  • less distance to hit the floor if it does roll
  • DCs are effectively inside a roll cage, so more protected if it does roll/get hit
  • if a car hits the trailer it is more likely to be knocked out of the way (most car crashes are glancing blows rather than head on, iykwim)

We have a Burley cub and although it was £££ it is fab.

I'd go with a tracker too - we had both and used the trailer a lot more. It's safer IMO, better for changeable weather and good for carrying all the stuff you invariably need to take. We bought a cheapy trailer off eBay but I think if I had to do it again, I would buy a Burley as I could resell it easily when I was finished with it.

Tracker?? I meant trailer of course.

Ok thanks, you echo my thinking.

Will have a look at Burleys, can add to the vouchers if needbe.

Trailer will last longer (ie be grown out of later) and you'll be able to carry kit/picnic as well. You will need to take extra care on sharp corners and if there are any narrow sections of the cycle paths you use.

However, the view is better from a bike seat and it's easier to chat to them. Having said that, at your DD's age, she's most likely to fall asleep!

I've gone for a bike seat as we cycle on roads and I feel we are more visible. Round here there are a lot of 4x4s which due to where the driver sits I don't think would necessarily see a trailer if pulling out at a junction.
