How fast can you run 5K in?

I completed c25k 2 weeks ago, never got to 5k with it as the longest you run is 30mins.

I've kept going and can run 5k just under 40mins.

Have no one to compare it against so what's average?

Asked DP but he can run 10k in 40 mins Hmm

Yeah. No. I'm in the "don't put me down for cardio" section Grin
Sprinting is fine, I can't do any form of distance, even when training with a running club as a hurdler and sprinter
Despite being a size 16 I'm pretty fit and love spin/weights etc, and can still out run everyone over 100m
I'm envious of people who can just go out and run EnvyEnvy

DH can do 5k in less than 19 mins. It would take me an hour or more.

WowOoo · 16/06/2014 22:11

Oh man. I was chuffed with my first long run on Saturday after two injuries.
After reading this I think I'd be the one at the back of you lot.
Someone has to be last I suppose!

Sweetkitty - sounds like you're doing very well to me.

Sweetkitty finishing the c25k is a huge achievement. Congratulations :)

Consider parkrun - a huge spread of times and a lovely atmosphere. We are over here....www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/2039973-Parkrunners-anonymous-keep-on-running

5k times vary a lot depending on the course (flat, hilly) and terrain (tarmac, trails) and in my experience on how much Wine and sleep I've had. My best is just under 27min but currently running around the 30 min mark.

We are all faster than the people still sat on the sofa!

Claybury · 19/06/2014 12:47

Just got a new PB of 22min 30 sec. Am thrilled as I am in my mid 40's and I haven't had a PB for over a year.

It's not really about other people' s times, it's about improving your own time and getting faster.

BeyondBurma · 19/06/2014 18:26

Oh wow Claybury that's amazing!

foreverlexicon · 20/06/2014 07:51

My fastest is 28.30, unfortunately all my 5k routes include a whopping big hill and I'm shockingly slow going uphill

MirandaWest · 20/06/2014 07:54

I have managed it in about 27 min 30 but that was a couple of years ago. Have fallen off the running wagon a bit and is a bit over 30 minutes. In fact given my lack of running recently probably more like 31 or 32 minutes probably.

schoolsgettingonmynerves · 20/06/2014 07:57

ryan 21 minutes! Wow I'm impressed

schoolsgettingonmynerves · 20/06/2014 07:58

Sorry and you clay that's excellent. No one understands the achievement of running until they try it themselves.

MysweetAudrina · 20/06/2014 07:59

20.45 is by best parkrun time this year. I have run faster but am finding it hard to get out for runs during the week.

my first 5k was something like 44mins. You jsut have to keep plugging at it if you do want to go faster. Strength training helps too. I'm now at 29 minutes on a very good day, but generally about 31 minutes for a 5k, and 64 mins for a 10k.

frignorant · 20/06/2014 08:17

I'm building it up on the treadmill and have now got to 33 minutes. I'm aiming for 30 minutes.

OP instead of increasing the speed each time you run why don't you increase the speed during your run. I do a steady pace and then increase by 0.1 or 0.2 every 5 minutes or whenever is comfortable. I find it better than running at the same pace for the duration. I'm sure it's better for you fitness level as well.

OneHandFlapping · 20/06/2014 08:51

I run faster on ground than on a treadmill. You might find you do too, OP.

It's a very different movement, using different muscles, so when you make the transition to running on ground, you'll have to cut back your distance and build up again, or else you'll risk injury.

OberonTheHopeful · 20/06/2014 11:24

I ran 5K in 34 mins yesterday, which is a new record for me. Ran a first full 5K a few weeks ago in 38 mins so very pleased with the improvement. My 10K time last week was 1h13mins Hmm.

A friend told me about park run the other day. There's one near me so I think I'll give it a go Smile.
