Running for a fatty

FriendlyFeatures · 08/06/2014 00:20

Considerably less fat than 3 months ago and have lost 2.5 stones by eating well and exercising.
I have just bought a decent pair of trainers and a sports bra that will hopefully prevent me from getting two black eyes :)
I was thinking of going for the couch to 5k app, anyone got any wise words or want to join me in this new way of life (I never ever dreamed that I would enjoy exercising but I love it and the positive effects it has had so far)

Congrats on your weight loss, thats brilliant!

I did c25k this time last year, and it has honestly changed my life (at least in fitness/exercise terms) - I'm 41 and had never been able to run, even when I was a very fit teen. And I went from c25k to doing a 10k to doing a half marathon! In two weeks I'll do my first triathlon, something I would never ever have considered until c25k showed me that if I wanted something, I could work at it and it would happen

C25k works really well and it's amazing how much you progress until you can actually run for 30 minutes. When I did it I had to put in my diary which days I was running so I had no excuses, and make sure I had everything prepared that day. Good luck!

Congratulations on your weight loss!

I started C25K about 4 years ago. I had never ran before, but actually got into it and enjoyed going out for a run 3 times a week. I hadn't quite got to 5K when I got pregnant and I started to get uncomfortable running (boobs!)

I actually missed doing it, and having had second child I am just starting to do it again.

It's definitely worth a go. I found having an app to help me which allowed me to play some music meant my 30 minutes went by really fast.

Good luck with it!!

C25K is a brilliant programme! I started a couple of years ago and went from not being able to run for 1 minute without gasping to running 45 minutes without stopping.

It took me longer than 6 weeks to build up to 30 minutes but after I hit the 20 minute mark I just started running to my own music and timing myself, building it up. It really did change my fitness levels and I lost 4 stone with that and healthy eating.

I'm very jealous now when I see people jogging because I miss it. After falling pregnant I stopped running and now with a 10mo I don't have the opportunity to go out running (or the nice running track I used to go down!) Needless to say the last time I went for a jog I was back to not being able to run for 1 minute Hmm

Yes couch to 5k will work. I have done it several times and it always gets me from struggling to do a minute to jogging for 40 mins. Just wish I had the will power to keep it going so I don't have to start again every year. I'm 50 and overweight. You can do it

FriendlyFeatures · 08/06/2014 23:20

Really looking forward to starting, hopefully my sports bra will be delivered tomorrow, no chance of even trying till then ,i'll do myself an injury!!
Thanks everyone for your stories :)
I've always wanted to run and am envious of people out seemingly easily running, just need to perservere and start from the beginning :)

You'll be fine. I'm overweight but I can now run over 3 miles without stopping. I've not run for 6 weeks due to a painful foot so going back into it next week. Hopefully will be back to running 3 miles.

I am a fatty (BMI top end of obese) and I am doing the C25K plan. I have now completed week 6 and can run continuously for 25 mins.

Good luck! You can do it!

I am on week 3 of C25K and absolutely love it. Inspired by a guy at work doing the London marathon. I told him I thought it was amazing etc and he looked a bit puzzled and said "but it's just running, anyone can do it, all you've got to do is keep training and then you can do it" and I thought HELL YEAH!!!

FriendlyFeatures · 12/06/2014 01:25

Thanks Dizzy and Edith all set for tomorrow morning, taking the dog with me who is a daft lab and will probably knock me over!!

Good luck with your run tomo!

I started C25k 4 stone heavier than I am now. It totally changed my life. And that first run was the hardest - it was hard! And from there it got easier and easier and I became hooked, and lost 4 stone and 12 inches from my waist! If I can do it, anyone can!
