Does the Tupler technique work?

I have diastasis recti (abdominal separation) following 2 pregnancies with large babies: a self-diagnosed condition which my GP repeatedly ignored. Despite exercising my tummy still sticks out making me look 5 months pregnant Sad Previous advice from my GP included sit-ups and crunches which actually made it worse... Whilst looking for treatment options, and trying to avoid surgery, I stumbled across the Tupler technique. I was delighted to finally understand this condition and angry for the lack of diagnosis/support/information in the NHS and ante-natal classes. Has anyone tried the Tupler technique and if so what are your thoughts/experiences? Thank you.

Watching thread with interest.....

I attended a post natal Pilates class after DC2 blissfully unaware of the damage I was doing. (Lots of sit ups etc). I share your frustration OP. how bad is your split?

I was about to start the Tupler stuff and am pregnant again...

Thank you for your message oohdaddypig. First of all congratulations on your pregnancy Smile I was unaware diastasis recti was so common following pregnancies and ignored my GPs until I came across the Tupler technique website. My split is about 4 fingers and deep. It definitely got worse over the last few months of intense (wrong) exercise. Very frustrating to be given the wrong advice. I read on the website that are still things you can do whilst pregnant to prevent the condition getting worse. Hope all goes well for you!

twinkle thanks, that's kind. I hope you get some traffic on this.

I seem to recall that Tupler and its ilk do have a good success rate but at some levels, initial surgery is required for severe cases. Can you ask to be referred to a physio? It's crap that you have to push for everything! when I looked at the Tupler exercises, they didnt seem technically difficult - just a bit time consuming (as we all have so much time on our hands :) )

Apparently many many women have some level of split. I think mine is 2cm in places but I can't do any ab exercises without my stomach doming.

Let me know how you get on...

It's very shitty you GP told you to do crunches about the worse thing.

This pregnancy exercise website has lots of info on how to heal it. She also has pregnancy plan to help reduce disatasis. Not sure how effect it is an am starting tomorrow
