gait analysis and physio

Can anyone tell me what is involved with gait analysis and what you find out from it that you can do somwrhing about?

Also, when should you go for physio? I have a bit of a niggly pain in one ankle (near the ankle bone) in one foot. Also a bit of niggly knee twinge. It's not bad enough to take to a GP, would a private physio be able to help? (assuming they exist and I can find one near enough) Does a physio do gait analysis, prescribe orthotics/advise on specific shoes?

I can see it's expensive and I just want to be able to run without pain or fear of damaging my joints.

With a gait analysis, you run on a treadmill and they video you from the knee down. They're looking to see if you over or under pronate, and if you do then they will try a few different shoes to see which one best corrects the problem.

No idea on the physio, I'll let you know next week hopefully Grin

Gait analysis they take a video as Eau says. Some places have a scanner too that tells about where you are striking, pressure etc. I've an appointment next week with a place that does sports physio and podiatry as a cross-referral as I was told they often go hand in hand. The physio does gait analysis and checks if you have biomechanical issues. Not sure if it's then passed to pod or stays within the sphere of physio.

Never been myself before but mine's the same issue. What I believe, although I'm no physio so could be wrong, is post tib tendon problems (behind the bone of the inside of the ankle) caused by overpronating. I've had gait analysis done twice in running shops so know I do. It hurts my ankles and the odd twinge in my knees. I'm also a bit knock kneed - lovely picture I'm painting Grin

I personally chose that physio as they do all the things at once and the physio is a marathon runner.

I'm jealous! I don't think there's anything like that near me.

It's not the closet place I Have to say and have to go a bit more out of my way. I probably wouldn't bother only that I already wear support shoes and know my joints are rubbish, cheers mum for the genetics. Have a vague idea of wanting to do a hm next year but don't want to wreck myself in the process. Hoping it's a case of exercises to do rather than a couple of hundred on insoles or something!

Well, I went to the nearest place that does gait analysis. Looking at the video, I seem to over prenate on my left foot and turn my toes/knees out to compensate. The right foot didnt look as bad but must be taking more weight, hence the pain on that side.

I'm not convinced that expensive shoes are the answer!

I wear a knee support and an ankle support. My right side just seems weak. I ran a half marathon last week with no side effects. Was quite pleased!

That's amazing. :)
When I run 2 miles it hurts afterwards. Not when I run (unless I run over 4 miles or so) but a few hours later. Not sure why.

Think I'll go to a podiatrist and get a biomechanical test. Have found some not too far away and have plenty to choose from, but don't know how to choose between them. Is there anything I should be looking for?

I had one of those done via nhs, do you not have a podiatry dept at a dr surgery/health centre? Mine as referred me to physio to check my bsck out as she thinks it's coming from there. Also she build an insole up 2cm as found I had one left longer than other, most people have.

Try there first, you may have to wait.. But I think private podiatry they tend to get you to buy orthotics which can be £100 plus.
