Half Marathon Training

I am doing my first half marathon 2 weeks today (Leeds). Yesterday I did a half marathon length run, that I suspect was hillier than the Leeds route will be.

What do I need to do to make sure I am still fit for 13.1 miles but not too tired in a fortnight
's time?

My first half is at Milton Keynes next Monday!

I did the full distance last week. Rubbish time but I still did it. My trainer has now said to do shorter runs, I'm just back from a 6 mile run. So I intend to do a few more but concentrate on interval training.

I need to eat right too. So going to juice a bit next week for nutrition and eat protein with some good carbs

Having a sports massage beforehand I think too

Experimenting with glucose tabs at the moment too

Good luck! What time are you aiming for?

In the fortnight before a half I usually do three short runs during each week,of three to four miles each, including some sprint intervals.
The Sunday before the half I do 8 or 9 miles at race pace.
Good luck, it's a great race for a first half. Ate you aiming for a time?

Thanks folks.

I am aiming at finishing standing up! But I stand to raise another £24.82 if I come in under 2'48" (long story). Yesterday's run was 2'38". Jelly babies helped a lot too!

I just did my first ever Half this morning (Plymouth). After my last big run (11 miles) two weeks beforehand I did shorter runs (4ish miles) to keep my general fitness up. And then I didn't run at all after Tues just gone (DP is a PE teacher and told me I needed to let my glycogen levels increase in the days before a big run).
To be honest, as an amateur and a half marathon virgin Grin I found my best preparation was to be really relaxed about it all. Last night I decided to have steak and chips for dinner with a glass of red to help me relax. Mental attitude is so important I think. I found I actually really quite enjoyed running today and am already determined to run again next year to beat my time!
Best of luck Smile

Ooh well done. What was your time?

julietbat · 28/04/2014 12:56

It was 2:03:09 - I would have loved to have come in under 2 hours but realistically I was simply hoping to get round the whole thing without walking! So I was really pleased with that time Smile

Woo, I've just got back from Leeds Half. 2:23, which I was happy with. It's a hilly route and I wanted to come in under 2:30. I am build for distance rather than speed, so well pleased. And still standing!

I'm doing the Humber Half at the end of June. Bound to flatter than Leeds!

Hi everyone < waves >

I am doing my first ever HM in 12 days, so interesting to read the tips here.

I took a isotonic drink in a Camelbak and a pocket full of jelly babies. Sipped the isotonic, washed the jelly babies down with water from water stops.
