Autumn UK marathons? Somewhere nice?

so am feeling horrifically sorry for myself about withdrawing from Edinburgh marathon and reluctant to book flights and accommodation for Berlin in case I break any more bits of my feet ankles legs etc

was relieved briefly but have reverted to self pity and mentally badly need a long distance goal that, should injury repeat itself, won't be such a trauma to back out of (had apartments and booked, people were arranging time off work and it is just all a bit demoralising)

there seems to be a dearth of autumn marathons but am hoping some of you will know of events that might not be widely publicised

thanks :)

There's one in York in October but not too sure whether there's any places left (went quickly in January I think).

Have looked here and there are charity places available. Was run for the first time last year and although I only did watching I think people enjoyed doing it (although a definite hill near the end).

Sorry to hear about your injury woes it's miserable. The one thing that puts me off another marathon is fear of injury. I'm grumpy as hell when I can't run.

Chester is meant to be good. Think that's October time.

Beachy Head marathon is October and rates very highly. Very hilly and off road but incredible views and scenery. I will do it one day, just need to get to grips with training in the summer and overcome my injury fears!

Portsmouth seafront marathon is December.

I think there is a New Forest marathon September too, I know there is a half but I think they do the full distance too.

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 13:44

some of these look and sound amazing, thank you (hills though! yikes. I had a mental list of the flattest European marathons! Valencia, Edinburgh and Berlin!)

Beachy Head would be stunning but hilly AND off road high volume of training sounds like a good way to re-injure self. Perhaps there is a half.

Does it matter where it is? There's one at Loch Ness in Sept, info here. There's a long list of marathons on that site.

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 14:06

I suppose if it's close-ish and I have to withdraw it will be less annoying than if people have booked train tickets and stuff

loch ness would be incredible!

friend has just told me about an ultra in Ely that also offers a marathon and a half as options www.monsterracing.net/marathon2014.html

that's local (ish) and flat, I might go for that!

Ooh, there's one in Jersey! Shame it's an even year you're looking, there's a marathon at Grafham Water but it's only on odd years. I didn't know about the Ely ultra.

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 14:09

there are only 56 places left at Ely so please don't all sign up until I've thought about it!

think it was the first one last year

it looks fun with a lot of obstacles doesn't it!

Sign up to an ultra? I did 10 miles on Sunday and it nearly killed me! I think it'll be a while before I'm fit enough for an ultra. Maybe I'll join you in a couple of years.

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 19:56

nooooo not the ultra, the marathon

I know loch ness has already been mentioned and isn't flat but having done it I can thoroughly recommend.I did a not great time and lots of things went wrong for me but I would do it again in a heartbeat even knowing about the hill.Stunning scenery, good atmosphere, very well organised, pasta party before, brilliant goody bag, T-shirt and medals, and a meal when you finish( never has chicken curry tasted so good!)
So glad you are still wanting to a marathon mitchy

Mitchy1nge · 01/05/2014 09:35

it does look amazing! am very very tempted but don't think it's that much closer to home than Berlin, it's only about 10 minutes quicker to Inverness by air Shock

but it's definitely going on my list!

Mitchy1nge · 05/05/2014 20:57

I'm doing Chester. Loch Ness is meant to be lovely too. My first was in April, in Paris.

LaceyLee · 08/06/2014 00:05

There's a half in reigate in September. It's quite hilly apparently but might be ok over shorter distance?

EleanorAbernathy · 12/06/2014 19:54

The Robin Hood Marathon in Nottingham at the end of September - it's a nice flat course. I'm doing the half :)

loveableshoulder · 18/06/2014 21:31

eleanor I'm doing the nottingham marathon :) wanted to do York but didn't get tickets int time...and the flat nottingham course appealed :)

End of September: perfect for summer-holiday training.
