Weight loss/toning etc WITHOUT cardio?

I'm trying to lose weight/inches.

I love the Shred as an exercise DVD, but I have exceptionally dodgy knees (squint kneecaps) so I'm struggling with the cardio sections as I can't do the skipping, jumping as it put stress on my knees. The strength/abs are mostly fine with some adaptations.

What can I do? Are there good cardio exercises that don't involve knees/jumping about that I can substitute in for these sections?

instead of the skipping, do high knee marching. Instead of the jacks, do side steps. You can easily find low impact versions, just try to keep moving to keep your heart rate up :)

Have a look at the 30 day plank challenge.

I do a hiit class and lots of the exercises are core - russian twists, crunches, hip raises and it gets my heart working hard.

Swim. Cardio but not weight bearing.

Restricting my diet works best. I know that sounds obvious but all the exercise I do simply makes me feel better not lose weight.
Spinning is excellent, my friend had a knee replacement and was told to do this ( stay in the saddle ) I love it too

Swimming isn't a viable option given our pool timetable at the moment; they've swapped classes about so the times I can manage are all club times.

Diet restriction is happening - 7lbs so far, but it's leaving wobble Blush

I'll have a look at the plank and also the low impact stuff; I'm guessing that it's just about sweating basically?

There are a few sort of women's mini-gyms around that have weights machines and give you a program to do on them, might be useful for toning up?

They usually have names like 'Just for women' or 'curves' (think that might be a chain) and are found above a bank or office or something.

Minigym would be lovely, but there are none locally without travelling about 10-15 miles as I live in a lovely rural town, with the emphasis on the rural!

I'm trying to do this solo to save cash so I can use the cash I would have spent to buy lovely new clothes that fit me!

Lift weights quickly. Kettlebells are really good for this but you will to get someone to teach you how to do it properly.

Have you tried doing the shred cardio exercises on a mini trampoline, much kinder on your joints and just as effective?
Boxing is also a very effective toning workout that is low impact on the legs

CelticJuggler · 05/03/2014 06:38

Mini trampoline? No, I don't have one. Might look into that when I get some cash.

Might try the boxing stance Jillian does and just do that, although it's a bit boring, but as it's only for heart rate then I guess it'll work until I can work out alternatives.

Cycling?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 05/03/2014 11:17

To be honest, weights are just as good, of not better at burning calories/fat than cardio. People get hooked up on cardio and think it is more effective because they feel they are working hard but it isn't.....

get yourself some weights, go on you tube, there are lots of brilliant tutorials, set yourself a programme and away you go.

Trx straps are excellent and you can buy them for home too...they take up no space and are brilliant as they are body weight exercises.

Have a look on Fitness Blender website. They have loads of toni g work outs, as well as low impact cardio.
