What's park run?

I've started 30 day shred on the days in between my runs. Did first one today and felt quite wobbly afterwards. It's amazing what you can do in 20 mins.

It's w6 run3 tomorrow. I'm not checking ahead so every day is a surprise. :-)

cinnamongreyhound · 13/03/2014 19:03

It will be great startwhereyoustand! I am an RD at our local parkrun, everyone is lovely and timing is really not an issue, we have 17-45 min finishers and the last people always get cheered over the line so really don't worry.

This is parkrun MissSmiley. It's a free timed 5k RUN (not race) at 9am all over the country and in fact now the world as people have started them up elsewhere. It's run by volunteers and sponsored by a variety of sponsors. You go to the website and register then print a barcode. Turn up around 8.45 and run, at the end you will be given a token, your barcode and then the token will be scanned and a few hours later you will receive and email/text with your time and position and can view any parkrun anywhere from the site. I love love love parkrun and everyone should aim to do one, go to the website and find your closest one. They are in parks or country parks and are usually 2 or 3 laps.

I've just finished my second week 3 run. Enjoyed it again. I hope I still do when it involves more running. I've been really inspired by this thread and it's nice to 'chat' to others who are much further on and showing it can be done. Smile

dizzyday07 · 13/03/2014 19:54

W2R3 completed tonight. Although my overall distance seemed less than I have done before (as I tend to have to do more than 5 mins walking at the end), I had definitely covered further than before by the end of the 6th "run"!

Will be starting W3 at the weekend and that involves a whole 3 mins of running EEK!

petitdonkey · 13/03/2014 21:12

cinnamon - thank you for that link!! I have never heard of Parkrun before but there is one in my town. My 39th birthday is in May so I have just set myself a personal challenge to join them by then Smile

StartWhereYouStand · 13/03/2014 21:37

Thanks for the parkrun reassurance cinnamon Smile

I love the sound of it and the community, volunteering, non-competitive aspects appeal to my inner hippy sense of wellbeing.

Morrigu · 13/03/2014 22:26

Oh best of luck for your parkrun experience StartWhereYouStand. I registered about a month ago as our local one has only started. Was planning on waiting until I could give it a decent time but I'm becoming a bit braver about doing it sooner rather than later. After all it's not a competition, it's only between me and myself really.

Maybe wait until I'm fully comfortable running about in the daytime (getting there slowly) before I throw a load of people into the mix :)

cinnamongreyhound · 13/03/2014 23:46

Yay! Spread the parkrun word!! Everyone should have a go really my 6 year old has done two and managed to get a 4 min pb on his second, completing it in 45mins :)

anja1cam · 14/03/2014 07:23

Thanks for that cinnamon, maybe I'll pick up the courage for parkrun this year! I know every one recommends it and afaik there are two nearish me.

GerundTheBehemoth · 14/03/2014 07:33

Once I'm up to 5K I might start doing a parkrun. There is one at 9am on Saturdays, in the same town where I teach kids' aikido at 10am, so that could fit together nicely.

fullerlonger · 14/03/2014 07:51

Really want to do a park run. No junior one here though Sad

fullerlonger · 14/03/2014 09:22

3k run continously this morning, not bad for first try. Runkeeper is so useful. Now to try and find something to put my phone in while I run. Pants didn't work Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 14/03/2014 12:57

What do you mean junior one fullerlonger?

TheresLotsOfFarmyardAnimals · 14/03/2014 13:00

Hi , can I join you? I'm up to w3r1 that I completed yesterday. I can't believe that I did it, which is my general theme so far. I'm relatively young but so unfit and this seems to be working well.

MissSmiley · 14/03/2014 23:31

Big mistake doing 30 shred! I have been unable to run today even walk actually. In fact if I'm honest sitting on the loo has been painful! How can 20 mins of exercise cause so much agony. I'm going to be brave and try w6 r3 tomorrow if my legs can remember how to move...
I will keep you posted.

anja1cam · 15/03/2014 09:09

Hi TheresLots welcome! It's great isn't it? Every week I was amazed I had stuck with it! Though I spent about a fortnight on W3 Blush

MissSmileyoh my commiserations! I know I have this to come when I finally pick up my kettle bell again. When i get back into it, I normally do a tiny 10m routine after my run, but all the squats kill my legs in the first week...

MissSmiley · 15/03/2014 09:31

I made it. Completed w6 r3 this morning. Still sore from the squats but ran for 25 minutes without stopping. I even "stepped it up a gear" as Laura suggested for the last 60 seconds!
Feeling good. :-)

anja1cam · 15/03/2014 09:33

Good morning everyone, hope you are looking forward to a good weekend. I just wanted to report that I did run 5k this morning, after successfully battling with my defeatist self. I felt really crap and ran pretty slow but avoided cutting the distance in half after all. I need to explain that my normal 'autopilot' loop is around the block, makes just 5k but there are lots of opportunities to turn off and head straight home (located inside the loop). It went a bit like this:

StartWhereYouStand · 15/03/2014 14:07

Well done MissSmiley and anja on your long runs.

I managed w5r3 (the 20min continuous run) this morning. YAY Grin

It was definitely a mental game to try and keep going for the last 5 mins - legs felt really heavy. I almost had to actually say out loud 'come on you can do this' ..... but I realised since I was running past the local shops at the time I would probably look like even more of a loon if I started talking to myself.

But, hey, I did it and I really never imagined that 6 weeks ago when I struggled on the first 3min run that I could do 20mins.

So onwards and upwards to wk 6 and parkrun next Saturday (eek!).

TheMaw · 15/03/2014 18:57

Ooh, can I join please? I'm desperate to lose weight, and I was recommended C25K by a friend. I got really into running a couple of years ago, but have since had a baby and haven't run for about two years. I did really love it when I was doing it though, so I downloaded the ZenLabs app a few days ago. I'm on W1R2 and I'm going again tomorrow. I'm really hoping that this thread will give me a massive boot to get going when I can't be bothered!

anja1cam · 15/03/2014 19:06

start congratulations! YAY! Be very proud. I do remember exactly that feeling of amazement, that I could really do it. I had to remind myself today of that, I can do it, and should stop making excuses!

theMaw hello and well done on getting started! Try to decide on a schedule and stick to it, come rain or shine (or recently, fog!)

TheMaw · 15/03/2014 19:17

anja1cam Hello! And thanks for the advice, I find it hardest to run in the wind no matter which direction it's blowing in. But I live in Scotland so it's always going to be windy, so too bad!

cinnamongreyhound · 15/03/2014 19:33

Hi ThereslotsofFarmyardAnimals! Well done on getting this far, the plan really works.

That's great MissSmiley, well done!

That's great anja1cam, 31 mins is a really good time.

I think it's at least 50% mental StartWhereYouStand, well done its a great achievement!

Welcome TheMaw! You have an advantage over me, I'd never run before so at least you know how great running can be :)

OP posts:
Dharmalovesdraco · 15/03/2014 20:13

Bloody hell Anja I'd be thrilled with 31 mins as should you be, that's brilliant especially when you feel crappy. Well done you!!

Everyone else well done too, it is hard and the fact we are still going/starting is amazing.

I went and had gait analysis done today and am the proud owner of a new pair of trainers, hope they are worth the money!!

Morrigu · 15/03/2014 21:29

Well done MissSmiley and I also think that's a brilliant time anja.

Whoo-hoo go StartWhereYouStand!! I agree it's such a mental hurdle but now you know you can do it.

Hi TheMaw. I also don't like running in the wind. Not so bad when it's blowing pushing me forwards :) but I find it exhausting running into it.

Fingers crossed for your new trainers Dharma. What did you get (being nosey just as all these sports brands are new to me)?
