Does anyone do exercise solely at home and if so, what routines, equipment do you use?

Gyms/sports clubs never seem to have a timetable of classes which matches the times I could or would ideally attend. I have a cupboard full of equipment I have bought over the years which I could be putting to good use. These include a medicine ball, a stretchy resistance type thing, small weights, a skipping rope and a small fitness trampoline.

I'd like to make exercise at home a habit by doing a small amount each day, say 15-20 minutes. I could do something different each day or focus on different areas each day, but I don't know where to start in putting together a routine. Can anyone point me to recommended resources? I've obviously googled and looked on pinterest, but the amount of returned results is overwhelming. I would particularly like to know how to break up the different areas of cardio/resistance training/toning/stretching.

The only other exercise I regularly do is walk our dog about 3 or 4 times per week, where I will go for a 40 minute brisk walk (DH and dog walker do all the other walks)

Can anyone help? I just want to get started.

I do YouTube videos at home. Hate gyms so much and as I work at home, I fit this in to my schedule or do it after dealing with an annoying client! The CafeMom Studio workouts are good

Have been a home exerciser for 7 years. Ever since I went to back to work with a baby in nursery 4 days a week and realised that something had to give. The time I spent travelling to a gym was time I could spend doing something else. And I could fit exercise in on non working days during naps- or as she stared at me in bewilderment from her bouncy chair :-)

We're lucky that we have a pool at home, so I swim three times a week and normally do a fitness video.

Shred occasionally.
Current one is 7 Day Slim.

I used to exercise at home but as I became more serious about weight training I joined a gym, it's hard to replicate at home the range of strength training equipment in a good gym.

If I had to I could cope by converting the garage but tbh it means so much to me that I'd not move house without taking proximity to a gym into account.

I do practise yoga at home.

I have a treadmilll, a cross trainer and a workout/ trainer thing for the wii, I use these at home when I have the time / motivation.
I have a bicycle and go for a cycle occasionally.
I also go for a run outside sometimes which only requires decent trainers and a decent sports bra.

atthestrokeoftwelve · 07/02/2014 12:18

I agree Suzanne, I like weight training, but my gym offers a huge range of specialist equipment that I don't have at home.

Suzannewithaplan · 07/02/2014 12:39

I admit I'm lucky had I young children or full time work hours it would be difficult to get to a gym.
As it happens I work from home and the hours required are minimal so the gym gives me something to do, and walking there and back also counts as exercise Wink

atthestrokeoftwelve · 07/02/2014 12:51

Suzanne, I work 30 hours a week, but I am self employed and choose my hours, so I like to hit the gym as soon as the kids are at school in the morning.

I have ordered a DVD and some new resistance bands but have also decided to join a body conditioning class out of the house after all, just to get me started and pick up some ideas. A friend is coming with me and it's close to home, so I think I will manage that one class. There's so much on Youtube, it can be overwhelming coming up with a plan.

I wish I had a pool at home Envy Smile I like swimming.

The Body Rock HIIT website is brilliant. Lots of variety, and they have real time challenges which are great. I was a Jillian Michaels addict until I started body rocking. Excellent stuff.

I do turbofire, Insanity and T25. cancelled gym membership and actually work out much harder at home!

areyoubeingserviced · 12/02/2017 17:58

I bought the insanity Max 30 DVD. What a revelation. I have been doing it for four weeks . It's hard , but it works.
I also use Karen Voight yoga DVDs.

I do kettlebells, in particular Kettlercise. Lean in 14 is a good programme in that it starts at beginner level but progresses you up through to more advanced programmes.

I have been working out at home for at least 10 years. I do it first thing and it's become a habit. I like to work out at home, no having to go somewhere for exercise, no wasting time travelling, no fighting over equipment and on the rare occasion I tweak a muscle I can stop and ice etc without travelling anywhere. I have a range of equipment, various free weights, agility ladder, pull up bar....I run, do a range of Beachbody workouts, adore FitnessBlender, yoga, pilates etc.

Suzietwo · 14/02/2017 07:00

Training at home for 3 years.

I use kettle bells, dumb bells, the step to the back door and if I'm lucky some boxing pads with the bloke. Sometimes skipping rope and resistance bands.

I also use a personal trainer who comes to me once a week, to keep me going. I train with a friend at 7.45am on Sundays. It's £15 well spent!

I always find straight up videos very lonely. Started using Flex and doing classes with my friends on the other side of London.

On stressful weeks I'll do Lucia's yoga and on weeks where I want to kill it I'll do Lawrence price's classes. Surprised more people aren't talking about it tbh.

SlightlyTired · 22/02/2017 19:50

I have been working out at home for years. I have a pretty extensive DVD library - all the Jillian Michaels stuff, quite a lot of Beachbody, etc, and also have the Kayla Itsines book, but like others I have switched to FitnessBlender and love it. I have power block weights and do mostly strength training (used to be a cardio junkie - now I'm a weights evangelist Smile). I probably do a session 5 times a week. I also do a 45 minute brisk walk maybe once a week. If you struggle with planning out workouts and staying motivated, you can buy very reasonable workout plans from FB. Otherwise watching and searching the vids, and adding them to your favourites, is all free.

sandymcallister · 28/02/2017 15:09

Lisa I do too! I just requested to join your tribe :D Are you on the free 1on1 coaching plan? The trainer sounds dreamy on the phone Wink
