Race for Life

They have released the race for life details today and, after 3 years of pregnancy/breast feeding, I am seriously considering entering.

I would like to run the whole thing but at the moment I am very unfit. Has anyone managed to run the whole thing from being zero fitness?

I think you'll get loads of couch-2-5k recommendations - I haven't done it myself but am considering after not running for about 18mo since pg w DC2.

I'm sorry this is not a direct answer to your q but I clicked because I think the race for life is a really lovely first race if you want to get moving and have an initial goal. I've done a few and the atmosphere is amazing. It's all women together and a family day out supporting (ice cream vans, local radio etc), there is a huge range of abilities/fitness from (a few) serious runners who'll do it in 20mins, brisk walkers, families with quite small girls in fairy wings to a team from the local discount store who all did the warm up with fags on the first time I ran it! The feeling approaching the finish when everyone is cheering (and it's all I can do to stagger on) is really motivating.

Even if you walk it will only take an hour and you can work as quickly or slowly as you please. I've done other 5km runs which have been fun but felt a bit more competitive/jostle-ish and just don't have the same element of support/joy.

Go for it. You've inspired me!

I though I would get recommendations for the C25k! It's just really hilly where I live Hmm. I would love to be able to run though. I'm in the middle of a fairly strict weightless regime so if I can stick to this I should be able to put my mind to the Race for Life. I think I might see if I can get some friends to do it with me and then I will have to do it!!

(Glad I've inspired you with just the suggestion of it though!)

Details of the Chelmsford race can be found here:

Chelmsford Race For Life

I'm thinking about doing it too! It's not until July so that should be plenty of time to get ready - should it??

dementedma · 18/01/2014 19:00

Yes I have and yes you can.
Follow the couch to 5k podcast and you WILL do it!

Joules68 · 18/01/2014 19:33

I did last year! Did do c25k and then joined a running club

I'm doing 10k run this year with my dd's

smartiepantsgirl · 18/01/2014 20:17

Yep, loads of time. You can def do it. I started with the Race for Life, moved onto some 10k's and am doing my 2nd half marathon in a couple of months. Good luck!

Ok - you've all convinced me! I've had a look at the c25k and it looks (fairly!) doable.

Thanks for the link to the Chelmsford one - I think that is probably the closest one to me.

I think I will need to go and get some trainers though!

Good trainers and good bra - I'm sure you'll be fine! Great supportive atmosphere come 'race' day too.
