Come and talk to me about trail shoes?

I've been running on flat paths for 4months, and want to go off road sometimes.

Have got some lovely running shoes, fitted at proper shop etc, but they are road shoes, and a) they don't grip in mud and b) i don't want to mess them up because i like to shred indoors sometimes, so thought the next step (ha!) is buy some trail shoes.

Our local parkrun is almost half on grass/through woods without gravel paths and i want to join...

i don't know where to start

i over-pronate and have a high instep, so my road runners are very cushioned and have moderate support, what things do i need to take into consideration when choosing an off road shoe, if any at all.

TIA

I don't know but I think you should go to the running shop with the best reputation for this - around December time I moved the other way, from running off road in trail shoes to running mostly on roads in road shoes and now I have a calf strain and my foot is all taped up because it's affecting the arch somehow Hmm

I don't know if trail shoes come in anything other than neutral though, you might need orthotics? sweatshop do them quite cheaply and have those hot mould things I think

I use ASICs gortex for park exercises. They come up smaller than standard asics fit. They are heavier and less flexible, but you get used to that quickly, keep your feet dry mostly - wet socks are the weak point, have good support and are pretty cheap compared to my road shoes.

Just look for grey shading around the arch that will tell you whether they have arch support or not.

Thanks everyone, it was Sweatshop who did my gait analysis and fitted my road shoes, so I'll go back to get trail shoes then.

That's really interesting about the drop, when I'm more confident in what I'm wearing that will be really useful for buying shoes online etc.
