Im 9st 11lbs (but only 4ft11" so built a bit like Cilla Battersby).

Starting fitness again today- aim to do most DVDs from home and some online stuff (ie Fitness Blender videos and 30 day challenges)

Also going to throw in about 2 or 3 runs a week

if this doesnt work I dont know what else will.

I am gently dieting so I can fasten trouser waistband. It is practical.

I would love to be 9st 11lb.

I wonder if anyone here has any advice for me. I would really appreciate it. I am 50, weight just at top of BMI normal range (usually a bit less than that but Xmas etc....am back on low carbing at moment to get weight a little down). I am terribly unfit (think out of breath after two flights of stairs, walking), I hate being outdoors in the cold, I don't do "classes" and anyway do not have the time to attend them. I am mentally a very busy and focused person but physically incredibly lazy. When I was young I used to be very naturally fit (was a dancer, very slim etc). It's dawning on me that I am no longer young.

I don't want to get amazingly fit or anything. I am too old for bikinis etc anyway, and it's actually not really about how I look (although obviously I like to look nice too). But things are starting to ache and hurt and I would like to just be somewhat more supple and have a bit more physical energy and stamina etc. A bit of a New Year's resolution. I am starting to feel physically old and I don't like it! Has anyone got any suggestions for a type/regime of exercise that:

  1. I can do in my house and no-one else has to be involved in.
  2. Is OK for someone coming from a very unfit baseline.
  3. Doesn't cost a huge amount.
  4. Is relaxing/calming/stress-relieving rather than stressful and exhausting.

I was thinking of getting an exercise bike and a Pilates book. Any further thoughts on that?

Thanks!

Thedudesmummy, I know you said no classes, but would some gentler dancing such as scottish country dancing appeal?

Abgirl · 07/01/2014 17:25

NY resolution last year was to weigh less by NYE 2013 and I did it - lost 3 stone. Still have 1 stone to go so carrying on with exercise and I use MFP to count calories.

For exercise, started off gently with walking and doing just dance/zumba on wii. Progressed to davina dvds, and then with a friend at work did 30DS. Went on to do 'ripped in 30' and various other Jillian Michaels workouts but prefer a bit more variety so in November started the 'turbofire' programme which is challenging but very effective. Also convinced DH of the merits of a long walk on any Sundays it isn't raining - yet to convince DSs it is fun - though they usually enjoy it once we are going :).

Plan for this year is to do another beachbody programme, c25k and maybe some weights or kettlebells.

I get up early and work out first thing and can honestly say I have never felt better. (and having to buy a whole new wardrobe has been an added benefit!)

ssmile · 07/01/2014 18:25

Thedudesmum have you tried building in some walking everyday. Half hour brisk is great for weight barring and fat burner. It's free and great for calming a busy mind :) I know it's "simple" answer but effective. That and the shred DVD is really effective 25mins strength training and as much cardio as you feel you can push yourself.

I am using my cycle trainer every other day trying out 20sec hard blasts and 20sec recovery it's really effective I'm dripping after 6mins! After a 5 min steady warm up. Using my fitness pal app again to keep track of calories is really effective at losing weight. I lost 40lbs this way last year.

theDudesmummy · 07/01/2014 19:30

No to walking outside ! I would never keep it up! (except when I have my little son for the day, I do try to take him to the park, so maybe once a week). And really, no classes (no time for them and hate being with other people....!). The Shred thing I have heard of but it sounds too scary for a lazy bum like me....But thanks for the responses!

theDudesmummy · 07/01/2014 19:30

Looking at exercise bikes....

lookout · 07/01/2014 19:31

I'm only 5'4" and am so embarrassed by how overweight I am that I'm not even gonna post it Wink. But I am trying to do something about it and my realistic ideal weight would be 10st 5lb.

theDudesmummy · 07/01/2014 19:33

And I have ordered that Pilates DVD, thanks!

Tiredemma · 07/01/2014 19:49

Grr.

Im a bit pissed off. I had to suspend my "shred' session about 10 mins in as I caught DS1 filming me on his Ipad bounding around the dining room like an elephant on acid.

Will have to do it again tomorrow with added gusto to make up.

I just started a fitness regime today, I am doing HIT training. Going to aim to do it every other day. I want to lose some weight and get fit

I need to lose at least 7 lbs

benjalamummy · 07/01/2014 20:34

theDudesmummy I know you just ordered the 10 min pilates dvd, but you could also try 'Yogalates'.

www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_9?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=yogalates+dvd&sprefix=yogalates%2Caps%2C262

I have 3 of these dvds and love them to bits - it really helped me to de-stress, and is a great if you are new to yoga.

theDudesmummy · 07/01/2014 21:10

Thanks, I will try that one too!

Niknakpaddywhack · 07/01/2014 22:51

HahaHarrie I also love dancing and prefer the Wii to Dance dvds - possibly because of the 'feedback' with the Wii, it informs you how hard you've worked etc so something to beat each time.

Theonlyoneiknow · 07/01/2014 22:56

Just done my second 30day shred! Need to keep it up, need to keep it up ....

AndWHOOSHTheyWereGone · 07/01/2014 23:04

I've just killed myself doing aerobics. Every time I reached that point where I wanted to sit down I let myself rest (jog!) for a count of four and then went straight back into it. Kept that up for 30mins and then 15mins doing toning exercises. Sat down for a minute and realised I needed a drink. Went to stand up and my legs buckled! So I can definitely say I pushed myself!

uggmum · 08/01/2014 22:29

So far I'm doing well this week.
Mon- 40 min swim and 1 hr Zumba
tues- 40 min swim
Today- 1hr Zumba (different class to Mon and much more hardcore)
Tomorrow I'm doing a 40 min swim and an hour of Body Combat, I fear that this will kill me!

AndWHOOSHTheyWereGone · 08/01/2014 23:06

I'm really struggling now. Had my depo shot yesterday and today have the MASSIVE cravings that always kick in after I've had it and last for a few weeks. Apparently it's why a lot of women gain so much weight on it. Five minutes after a huge dinner i felt like I hadn't eaten. Exercise dampens appetite though so I'm keeping moving and trying not to think about it!
