Sorry if posted in wrong place. I have signed up to a gym, which I will start next week when all is back to normal.
~What do I wear. I don't want to make any expensive mistakes.
Does anyone one have any suggestions to the really good clothes to wear.

This thread is a little old now, so why not check out our round-up of the gym wear Mumsnetters recommend for something a little more up-to-date. MNHQ.

Spend money on a decent sports bra and trainers. The rest can be bought cheap from Sports Direct or similar until you really know what you want.

gordyslovesheep · 03/01/2014 10:57

A good bra is worth it's weight in gold - I wear a Shock Absorber - it's da bomb of sports bras

I wear 3/4 length leggins and a sports vest (plus light weight fleece if out doors)

I buy my kit from Sainsbury's because it's cheap, washes really well and lasts for ever

Don't wear ordinary legging unless you want the world to know if you wear thongs

good cross trainers as well - you don't have to spend a fortune

Trust me, as a size 18 I would not have looked "nice" in a close fitting top!

Not that I looked nice in a baggy T-shirt, but I did have just enough confidence to get myself through the door.

AnnoyingOrange · 03/01/2014 11:01

In my gym, people wear all sorts. Loose or tight fitting, baggy t shirts, clingy vest tops. Long trousers or Capri length. All shapes and sizes. No body is there to stare

Just go along and do what you have to do

DrNick · 03/01/2014 11:05

i dont wear pants

this has been the topic of many a thread. From reasearch in my spin classes I can say its split 50 50

DrNick · 03/01/2014 11:06

i think a size 18 in close fitting clothing thats appropriate is way better then trying to kid themselves a baggy t shirt looks good

I dont care HOW big people are at the gym, and I think most people dont

foofooyeah · 03/01/2014 11:09

Agree to wearing work out t shirts, much more comfortable than an old T. I wear M&S black leggings, they are ancient but still going strong. Don't know if you have an ALDI near you but they are doing sports wear this week.

CooEeeEldridge · 03/01/2014 11:18

One thing to watch out for, if you wear 'normal' leggings (say topshop, dotty p etc) just watch they aren't see through on your bum. I used to wear leggings like those sometimes, you couldn't see through them normally but a few wide squats and the person behind got a lovely eyeful!!! Note that I wore these leggings for at least a year, and only realised when my boyfriend did a class with me, stood behind me and helpfully told me after the class!

LastOneDancing · 03/01/2014 11:22

I'm a RL sweaty betty (nice!) so I choose all black stuff and carry a dark coloured hand towel which doesn't show makeup marks if I haven't had chance to remove it properly. I also rate Sports Direct for starting out, and go for lighter tech fabrics rather than cotton.

Also, if you get all black kit, you can shove it in one wash ready for your next session.

Pipbin · 03/01/2014 11:22

I get cheap gym stuff from www.decathlon.co.uk.
I go from 3/4 length legging, sports bra from Primark and tshirt type top.

Pipbin · 03/01/2014 11:25

These are a bargain: www.decathlon.co.uk/slim-7-8th-leggings-breathable-id_8279736.html

craftynclothy · 03/01/2014 11:25

I wear a sports bra, some trousers like these and usually a cheap (Primark) vest top (the ones with the straps about an inch wide not the skinny straps).

I'd prefer to wear more of a sportswear top but I find they are a bit short and ride up.

I think it depends what you've areayd got. A lot of people are suggesting an old t-shirt on the priviso that you already have one. Don't go out and buy one. If you're buying a t-shirt then yes black is really best for any cardio, but really I'd only use it for your balance class.

I found a t-shirt was awful for cardio as when I got sweaty it stuck to me and made it harder to move. It would probably be ok for pump though. I also don't like long jogging bottoms for cardio as I've slipped a few times on them as they slip down as time goes on, I also couldn't run outside in them as they'd get wet again when they slipped down.

Personally I wear those 3/4 lycra tights things and a lycray top as they stick to me there is less chance of them riding up and showing my belly when doing star-jumps. I didn't start off wearing this but I do now believe this is best. If I do yoga it's a t-shirt and baggy trousers and if I'm running then it is a t-shirt or long sleeved top now it's cold with those shorter tights or long ones in the winter.

Just you get what you're comfortable with, but I wouldn't recomend you go buy non-sports stuff, but it would do for trying if you already have it.

Also I wouldn't recomend non-sports vests, you may find you're constantly fidgeting with the straps and you may also start flashing people when bending over (very common in pump and balance).

Cariad007 · 03/01/2014 15:33

A good sports bra is vital for anyone bigger than a B-cup, and by that I mean a proper sports bra, not just a crop top or one of those vests with an inbuilt support. The amount of times I've seen women bouncing around in an aerobics class and thought "They'll be hitting her knees in a year if she's not careful..."

SugarHut · 03/01/2014 15:34

Nipple tassles and a thong.

HTH.
