Please can someone show me a short barbell workout to do at home?

I have bought a basic 100lb barbell weights set:
2x 10lb
2x15lb
2x25lb

I would like to do a short effective workout with the barbell and weights at home 2-3 times a week but don't know what exercises are the best and most effective.

Nor what weight I should start with, or which YouTube demonstrators are any good.

I will book a PT session but can't afford it this month.

Can anyone suggest me a safe, effective beginner routine? In terms of fitness/strength I can do 20 press ups if that gives an idea, I have a small frame dancer-type body that doesn't muscle up easily. I want to get strong(er) and have v limited time as full time parent to 3 yo with SN.

Many thanks

I just downloaded workout trainer to my phone (free). It has workouts of varying duration and intensity and some with weights.

Thank you will look at that.
Just found this www.bodybuilding.com/fun/rudy9.htm

Does it look like a suitable beginner barbell work out?
Should I start with no weights, or the 10lb ones?
Thanks again.

Curls are suitable. You should start with low weight with compound exercises like squats, deadlifts and pullovers. I found this: barbell exercises There you can start with easy beginner exercises.

I'm a bit late to replying to this thread, but I found what are called ''barbell complexes'' very useful.

Google the term and there is also a very good Youtube video here:-

Try looking at body pump videos. You would ideally need some hand weights too. Start with the lowest weight for warm up, chest, back and shoulder weight, and the 15lbs for squats. A few tips -

  1. Be very very careful to make sure your posture is right. Back should be long and straight at all times. Keep your shoulders back and chest out.
  2. Bicep curls, etc - don't swing your body, don't let your elbows go behind your body for chest and shoulder work, you can put one leg slightly back to stop your body swinging.
  3. When doing chest presses the bar should be returning to your lower chest. Keep your shoulders low, away from your ears. If you feel it in your shoulders/top of arms you aren't doing it right.
  4. Dead lifts, and rows, you should be using your leg muscles and leaning forward with a straight back so the bar travels vertically up towards you.
  5. Squats, make sure the bar is on the fleshy part of your back and not the spine of the neck.
  6. Clean and press - bend your knees at the start of a press and again as you bring the bar back down, like a mini squat. Keep your knees soft and not locked at all times.

tbh, it has taken me a good three months of classes to master all the lifts totally correctly, I'm not really sure I would have been able to do it at home without mirrors and instructors to help.

Just be careful on safety. Without a rack/cage of some kind you'll find lifting heavier barbells for squats and overhead presses etc very difficult.
