Couch to 5k as a family?

DH needs to lose some weight and get active. DC are healthy weight and reasonably active but not sporty. As they get older and playing no longer involves running around like mad things, I can see their activity levels tailing off. I am a keen runner, running 5 times a week, racing often and other strength/flexibility sessions around improving my running.

I was thinking that we could do Couch to 5k together. There's a local 5k run on Good Friday that we could aim for.

When DH has tried to run in the past (IMO) he tries to do too much too soon and has to stop because of painful knees etc. I thought doing it with the kids would make him stick to the programme!

So, my questions are:

  • Is it sensible for boys aged 10 & 12 to follow such a programme?
  • How would doing that, in addition to my regular schedule, affect my running?

Any tips for selling it to the DC would be appreciated. DH is quite keen, DC not so much. I'm hoping to podcasts might do it - they usually have very limited access to electronic gadgets but realise I may be clutching at straws!

Don't know if you have a parkrun local?

My ds loves it. It's every Saturday morning, they are all around the uk, actually no, they are all around the world

You can volunteer to Marshall it or just run it. Great atmosphere and my boys love that it's a real 'race'

We're doing exactly this! Except none of us are runners... I've 'employed' the kids (10 & 13) as my 'trainers' and promised a family day out if they can get me running for a stretch of 15 mins :D

I need to get oldest ds moving - as you say they get older and their physical activity can really slow down...

We start tomorrow!

My dd did c25k with me. She's gone to uni now and carried on with the gym/healthy eating/running. Very proud of her.
