Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

sarah-the poster immediately before you is a fellow Silverstone runner Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 24/02/2014 07:04

Well done AmberNectarine! 9k in 54 minis 6 min/km by my reckoning so 60min 10k :)

Thanks Snowdown and sorry about your run.

Yay for your garmin cocochops, I could find the mn group then kindly got a pm with details and haven't logged back in since Blush!

Well done on your run OhOneOhTwoOhThree! We will have work out a way to find each other. I'll be the gibbering wreck standing next to a large man with a beard and two fed up little boys!!

TamerB · 24/02/2014 07:19

You can do it! I started running just before I was 60yrs and did my first half marathon a year later. I am doing my second next weekend. I started off with a running course, but now I just go out alone, when it suits me. Unfortunately I don't run in the rain - which is most of the time here!
I gave up on treadmills- too boring.

sarahandduck · 24/02/2014 08:36

Thanks.....I've PM'd Merry.

feetheart · 24/02/2014 10:11

To those doing Silverstone this weekend I have two pieces of advice:

  1. Make sure you remember where you park your car! I did it 2 years ago and after the race spent AGES looking for the damn car - eventually stumbled across a building and a very kind lady drove me back to find my car Blush
  2. You have to run through the F1 pole position. You go past it twice (if the course is the same) but are on the opposite side of the track each time. Second time I just had to veer off and run through it. May just be me though :o

Good luck to all those racing this w/e.

1 hour 10 mins running, 8.78km covered. I am happy with that managed to keep a pretty steady pace throughout, not a fantastically fast pace but steady at least.

EauRouge · 24/02/2014 11:28

Speed is relative! If you're happy with it then you know it was a good run.

Sirzy · 24/02/2014 11:31

Im happy. Never done over 7k before so wasn't sure what I would manage beyond that could have carried on but didn't want to push too far. Going to try to add 0.5km a week now until I hit 10k and then work on pace until May.

EauRouge · 24/02/2014 12:27

Sounds like a good plan. I found building endurance really helped with my pace on shorter distances.

Sirzy · 24/02/2014 13:32

That's what I am hoping. I am just pleased I can see progress now

Ooh good advice feet heart. I'm actually going to get a coach there and then DH and the DDs will be there to see me finish, so I'll be going home in the car.

cinnamongreyhound · 24/02/2014 20:41

5.5 miles with crazy dogs tonight :)

Sirzy · 24/02/2014 21:00

Did the crazy dogs help or hinder cinnmon?/

Fishandjam · 24/02/2014 21:04

That's a good distance sirzy, nice one! I want to increase my distance; had meant to go out for an hour tonight to see how far I could get, but after an unusually full-on day with The Spawn (and lugging stray cats to the vet etc) I am on my knees. Back aching, feet burning Sad And it's piddling down outside. Ah well, bootcamp tomorrow!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 24/02/2014 21:18

cinnamon I will PM you with my mobile number. I will be the one who allows tons of time to get there and ends up taking a wrong turning and arriving late Grin

Have you had any instructions - I think they were supposed to come by email?

cinnamongreyhound · 24/02/2014 21:22

I am starting to panic that I haven't got anything but my name is on the entry list. Will have to ask my club mates who've done it before.

I didn't see much of the dogs as we had three speedies up front me in the middle trying to keep up but only managing 8.45 min miles and dying and two at the back we had to stop for. Dogs tend to stick at the front of the pack even my two :)

Sirzy · 24/02/2014 21:34

Hope you manage to get some rest tonight Fish. That was my plan this morning just to go out for an hour but I ended up getting slightly lost which added the extra 10 minutes (and a lot of mud!) to the route!

I have bootcamp tomorrow night too, may go out for a short run in the morning will have to see how I feel!

MerryBuddha · 24/02/2014 21:59

Well done Sirzy!!

Managed a 6k on the dreaded treadmill (god I hate them) but I can control my speed much better on them than outside, where I naturally fall into a 10 min mile, even when trying to take it slower!!!

Well looks like my previous post were answered and now meeting sarahandduck at Silverstone, so won't be on my lonesome!!! Grin

Thanks for the advice Feetheart I will definitely lose the car, I do even at the supermarket!!!

Morning runners,
You were all v busy over the weekend, making me very jealous with your great pace and long distances Grin
So off I went for a run this morning, 6.2miles in 57 minutes, very pleased with that. I'm satisfied that I won't make a fool of myself at the Sport Relief mile.

Thinking of doing my first ever Park Run on Saturday

But many of you have MUCH BIGGER runs to be looking forward to, how are you feeling?

Sirzy · 25/02/2014 11:19

Thats great Thursday, you will fly around the sports relief mile! I am tempted to sign up for one of their 5k races just to give me some race experience before my 10k

OP posts:
Fishandjam · 25/02/2014 11:32

Thursday, why nervous about Parkrun? If I can manage it you most definitely can!

I knocked 6 minutes off my previous PB last Saturday at our local one Though I was still 60th out of a field of 70 (and that will include the back marker).

EauRouge · 25/02/2014 11:36

Parkrun is great fun, they are welcoming to anyone so it doesn't matter if you'll be upfront or whether you'll be at the back chatting to the tail runner.

ThursdayLast · 25/02/2014 11:48

Oh I'm such a stick in the mud, I get nervous doing anything new, especially on my own. But I've seen so much on MN to recommend it, it feels like a lovely introduction to organised running IYSWIM?
I am running the 6miles version Sirzy, again, I thought that would test myself, but in a fun pressure-free kind of way Grin

ThursdayLast · 25/02/2014 11:49

Well done fish!
6 minutes??

Mitchy1nge · 25/02/2014 12:45

EauRouge - I transferred the MN group to you to see if it would magically make it appear again but I still can't see it
