Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Well done you three! V impressed. I don't think I could do three days in a row either. Or run after PT. That also reminds me of PE at school, which I hated.

Sirzy · 19/01/2014 18:07

No run for me today but hopefully 6k in the mornjng

Managed my ten miles today as planned, but boy does it hurt! I had a plantar fasciitis injury a few years ago which started twinning about four miles in, and I generally felt slow. But on the plus side it was a beautiful day and I made it! Wine and an early night on my agenda for tonight ...

EauRouge · 19/01/2014 20:35

Brilliant, well done! Told you you could do it Grin Enjoy your wine and early night.

Snowdown · 19/01/2014 20:50

eat well done - enjoy your a wine!

EATmum · 19/01/2014 20:52

thanks guys!

Fishandjam · 19/01/2014 21:30

Well done EAT! Hope your wine is worth the effort Grin

Eau, I thought that any athlete should have at least one rest day in between training sessions? Rest, you enthusiastic fool.

Well, I have a little milestone to brag about - tonight I did my first ever sub-40 minute 5k. (5.12k in 39 mins 10 seconds, to be exact.) I know it's not much in comparison to what you guys get up to, but it's quite a big deal for me! And if you'd told me this time last year that I'd even be able to run 5k, I'd have smiled soothingly while looking for the men in white coats.

Now for a homemade lamb curry, pilau rice and Brussels sprout bhajis.

Sirzy · 19/01/2014 21:33

Fish, we are at pretty much the same stage then i managed 5k in 37 mins on friday.

Well done, Fish! Sounds like everyone had a good running day.

I sometimes run back to back if it's short distances, but yesterday's parkrun was tougher than I thought and DD2 has been keeping me awake more than I would like. Will definitely rest tomorrow!

Fishandjam · 19/01/2014 21:59

Yay for us then sirzy!

Odd thing is, I hadn't done any exercise since last Tues. Maybe the break did me good?

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 19/01/2014 22:16

That is fab EAT and fish!

EATmum · 19/01/2014 22:25

Nice one Fish! What MN needs now is a way of sharing that lamb curry with the rest of us ... I'd even share my wine

Sirzy · 20/01/2014 12:25

feetheart · 20/01/2014 15:01

3.5 miles in 38mins on a beautiful, clear, frosty dark morning :)

Sirzy · 20/01/2014 16:00

Ye I wanted to do longer but started with some interval training for the first time and think I pushed myself a bit too hard as I was knackered by the end!

I have just set myself up a training plan on the bupa run website, apparently it adjust dependent on how you do/how you tell them you feel after each run. Will be interesting to see if it helps me!

Im wondering if anyone can help is there such a thing as a watch type device I can set to vibrate at certain intervals. Im keen to take my couch to 10k outdoors in preparation for the proper run in May be cant be doing with clock watching all the time to know when to switch from run to walk and back again. Its easy on the treadmill as its right in front of you.

EauRouge · 20/01/2014 19:19

I'm sure some of the more expensive models vibrate. Mine just goes beep when it's time to change. Have a look on the Garmin website. Or if you just need to time things then an ordinary sports watch will do.

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 20/01/2014 20:53

Mine vibrates every time a start a new lap, then tells me lap time, I have set it to vibrate once every mile. Useful for longer runs, not so much for intervals.

Snowdown · 20/01/2014 23:04

I set up intervals on my iPhone using the run metre app.

Merrybuddha · 21/01/2014 07:20

The plan today, is 2 mile walk, 3 mile run and a fast walk 2 miles back. The only problem is trying to fit it into the day. Confused

ThursdayLast · 21/01/2014 10:27

4.5 miles in 45 mins in yucky conditions

EauRouge · 21/01/2014 11:04

It's horrible today, isn't it? It's foggy and icy here so I'm waiting until later to see if it clears up. I run on the roads and I haven't got a flashy light so I can't go out in the fog. Also got the worst period cramps ever, feels like my pelvis is about to fall apart :( I expect a run will make me feel better but I need to summon up the energy to go first!

ThursdayLast · 21/01/2014 13:06

Oh yes, dragging yourself through the period pain gloom would be worth it...but it really is difficult. I don't envy you.
I'm glad I went out when I did, the weather has only got worse here blaaaaah
