Is there a general running thread?

I am pretty new to running (started in Septmember) but have some pretty ambitious targets in 2014 (10k and half marathon) so looking for other runners to advice, kick up the backside and generally chat about all things running.

I have seen a few couch to 5k threads but I didn't get on with that so can't use those threads so thought a thread for all runners whether they are new to it or experienced runners would be good?

Hope you feel better soon.

Just done about 5k walking too making the most of the decent weather!

That's great Sirzy :)

Ran with my running buddy today - I'm getting sick of running in the cold and dark too. Wasn't really up for it, but since I wasn't running alone, I had to make th effort.

We did a 10k (6.25 miles) in 55.55, which we were really pleased with. Pushed ourselves - friend took the lead and wore the watch and he is faster than me so really pushed me!

Have just found a rural 10 miler on 2 feb which I'm thinking of entering. I think it's a really good distance. Anyone run one before?

Twelve, it's only been a few plays - don't beat yourself up :)

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 14/01/2014 19:48

Plays = days

TwelveLeggedWalk · 14/01/2014 22:28

I did go, I did 3 miles at sunset, and walked a bit so the dog could have a sniff about. It was all rather pleasant, and tragically when I got back my time wasn't much slower so I must run uphill INSANELY slowly normally Grin!

Still getting shin splint pain in one leg though - any suggestions for getting rid?

TwelveLeggedWalk · 14/01/2014 22:28

And I would LOVE to be able to do 10k in 55 mins. That's awesome!

Snowdown · 15/01/2014 07:24

Can I sign in - you all seem very motivated!
I started running 7 years ago, plagued with injuries - not all running related but I'm more careful about niggles now and taking days off to recover.
I like to run solo too, usually limit it to 20k a week by doing a couple of bootcamp sessions which involve resistance training and interval running but I'm hoping I can increase the distance a bit more this year without causing injury.
Don't really do many races - just the local 10k once a year. I find that although they make me run faster, my runs feel more miserable and I start to dread each run, so I tend to avoid them.

ThursdayLast · 15/01/2014 10:05

3miles covered in 30mins.
It was one of them blasted faster interval ones that makes my poor little lungs burn, and brings my stats right down because of aforementioned hills.
But still, first chance I've had since Saturday, so great to get out and about.

I have never entered a race, but I suspect I would feel the same about it putting me under pressure.
Bootcamp sounds like fun to me, misery loves company and all that.

I learnt to run on the running machine! This is progress for me as I could never quite bring myself to do it, too scared of falling, but did it last week. I still had to hold on with one hand but still - PROGRESS! Means I can run when it's raining now too...

Sirzy · 15/01/2014 13:42

I can't run on a running machine, I would rather go out in the rain!

Hello to all, and well done on everyone's recent runs. I haven't managed any since last week due to a bout of D&V over the weekend Envy (that's a green puking face BTW). But I recovered enough to do bootcamp yesterday, which was excellent fun - the instructor brought along a load of things like sections of telegraph pole, car and tractor tyres, kettle weights, jerrycans of water etc which all made up a pretend "gun". We then got split into two teams and had to disassemble and run around with bits of said gun, and then reassemble them a la that Royal Tournament navy gun competition thingy. Followed by several crippling sessions of abs stuff.

Hopefully will get a run in tomorrow lunchtime.

Sirzy · 15/01/2014 18:10

Glad you are on the mend now fish.

I want to do at least 5k tomorrow. Going to drop DS off at school and then go for it!

Checking in, hello all! Hope you're all ok.

Managed to squeeze in 4.25 miles in 45 mins earlier, with some walking intervals. Dodged the showers somehow too Smile
Pilates tonight, I always find I enjoy the stretching so much more after a longish run

How's everyone else today?

Snowdown · 16/01/2014 15:28

Have done a couple of 7km runs this week - felt a real buzz afterwards which lasted a good couple of hours, rest tomorrow and then shared PT session with dh on Saturday. Hoping to stretch my long run on Sunday to 12km.

EauRouge · 16/01/2014 16:00

Love a post-run buzz. Good luck with your long run on Sunday!

Can't believe you enjoy those boot camp sessions, Fish, it sounds like torture Grin Are you parkrunning this weekend or no?

I can't run on a running machine at all. I'm sure I could hear the bloke that did my gait analysis sniggering at my total lack of coordination.

I haven't run at all since Sunday, I woke up Tues morning with a really stiff neck/shoulder and it hasn't got any better :( Will running make it better or worse, do you think? Loosen it up a bit maybe?

TwelveLeggedWalk · 16/01/2014 17:50

Crikey, some of you lot are keen! Wink

ElvisJesusAndCocaCola · 16/01/2014 21:23

Evening everyone, some good running, by the sounds of things.

Fish and snowdown, where do you do bootcamp? It sounds really interesting but I can't think of anything like that round here.

I don't know much about shin splints, I'm afraid, twelve.

Did a threshold run today - three lots of 7mins threshold (or some where near to it, at least!) and 3 mins recovery. Five miles in total, with walking and jogging warm up and down. Felt good: I haven't done any interval training for ages cos I'm too lazy.

On sat I'd normally do a long run but my bf is coming to visit and taking me to the gym/spa for my birthday, so will be a mix of swim, gym and sauna. Will try to really push myself with some interval training, since I'll be running on a machine for the first time in ages. I find it so much easier to run fast on a treadmill, as on the road I just can't be bothered to push myself that hard!

Fishandjam · 16/01/2014 22:35

Elvis, we have Cambs Boot Camp do a session where I work. They do general public sessions on green spaces in the middle of town and suchlike. There's bound to be something similar near you.

No run for me today - meetings of various sorts got in the way. Feeling rather un-run this week! Eau, not sure re Parkrun, will need to see if DH is off on his training day or not.

Snowdown · 16/01/2014 23:48

We do our bootcamp in the local park - the trainer really pushes you, I work much harder than I do on a solitary run, it changes every week but it never gets easier because the fitter you get the harder you work.

Fishandjam · 17/01/2014 08:03

We have some stupidly fit people at our bootcamp. The instructor found out they were finding it all a bit easy, and promptly gave one of them a ten kilo weight vest to wear Grin The instructor is really very good. So long as he sees you're pushing yourself as far as you can, he doesn't care if you're not the fastest sprinter or unable to complete 20 burpees.

EauRouge · 17/01/2014 08:18

DH has volunteered to get up early so I'll be parkrunning tomorrow. Will try a couple of miles today and see how my shoulder holds up. Need to hit my Jantastic target!

Not sure I would enjoy a bootcamp, I'm not good at being 'encouraged'- it gives me flashbacks to school PE lessons.

Sirzy · 17/01/2014 10:36

5km in 37 mins. Happy with that!

OP posts:
Snowdown · 17/01/2014 11:30

eau bootcamp isn't much like PE - I hated PE at school. First session is often free, so maybe worth a try?

Fishandjam · 17/01/2014 13:21

I dodged PE the entire time I was at school. Hated it with a passion. So if I can enjoy bootcamp, anyone can!

Looking like I'm on for Parkrun tomorrow.

Sirzy · 17/01/2014 13:22

I hated PE at secondary school, I blame the evil teacher!

I am tempted by bootcamps but think i will wait til spring to brave that

EauRouge · 17/01/2014 14:07

Excellent, meet you outside the cafe at about 8.45? Will remember bin bags this time!

My DM was very generous with her fake injury PE notes so I rarely had to do it (she was also a PE hater at school and funnily enough a keen runner). I just don't like people telling me what to do Grin
