Hi all, I've been awol for a bit, but I'm after some recs for winter running gear, and for tights in particular. I've tried a pair of Mizumo thermo breathe I think they were, and they seemed okay. Anybody have particular favourites they'd push?! Ta!

I have thermal nike running tights and tops which I wear for the chilly days.

I have high vis lightweight tops I wear over the top to be seen and otherwise I look like an overstuffed black puddingGrin

I've had the nike stuff for a few years and it's still going strong. It's very warm too, keeps me toasty on the really chilly days.

On not so chilly days I just layer a short sleeve top under a long sleeve top and add gloves and a hat.

PepeLePew · 12/12/2013 20:17

I've got some great Karrimor stuff from Sports Direct - running tights, high vis jacket, gloves and hat. And cheap!

TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 12/12/2013 20:24

Doyou could you look up the label on your tights and let me know which they are - I'm finding it very confusing looking at online catalogues atm!

Pepe most of my summer gear is Karrimor but it's just not cutting it for the winter, I need some proper money thermal tights I think. But I'm in love with my lightweight Karrimor hi viz jacket (over a merino base layer) - I swear you could see that baby from outer space, lol!

Ronhill winter running tights - fleecy lining. Brilliant. Got mine last two years through Wiggle.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/12/2013 08:24

They are nike pro combat dri fit but googling suggests they may have been discontinued unfortunately.

They are fleece lined and super warm. I'm sure nike must do an updated version, I just can't quite work out what is whatXmas Confused

My mind is getting completely confused with all the different choices and names, I think there's a pure thermal based Nike Thermal tight, and a slightly higher spec thermal and weatherproof Nike Element Shield tight as well. Only £10 difference between the two. There's also Pro Hyperwarm Compression but that seems pitched a base layer for under outer tights or trousers. And that's just one brand. Argh!

I think I struck lucky because I ordered mine from Next of all places and they've been great. No choice, they were marketed as winter running stuff and I plumped for it because I needed it quicklyXmas Grin

I've quite a lot of nike running stuff and it's all been good so I don't think you can go far wrong really with whatever you go for.

manyhands · 13/12/2013 17:38

I got some Gore thermal running tights in the sale and they were brilliant last winter and last night.

shanghaismog · 14/12/2013 08:28

H&M have great sports stuff too. Have a lovely pair of fleece lined tights and a grey (as in all the reflective material) high viz jacket from there.

chatterbocs · 14/12/2013 22:31

Karrimor running tights & a high viz long sleeved top. If I wear much more I get too hot.

RunRunRuby · 16/12/2013 10:31

I've just been wearing Karrimor tights (£10.99 from Sports Direct), gilet part of my 2-in-1 Karrimor running jacket (another Sports Direct bargain), long-sleeved Adidas top and fingerlessgloves. But I'm not out for much more than 30 minutes so don't get that cold.

I started a similar thread a while back when it started getting colder and before I'd started running, I'll try and find it in case it has any useful suggestions for you Xmas Smile

Slightly down market, but I just bought some skinny cuffed ankle jogging bottoms from primark at £7 each Grin

I know they won't last forever, but for the time being they are super comfy and warm.

RunRunRuby · 16/12/2013 10:45

Here is the thread I started a while ago about winter running clothes Xmas Smile

TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 16/12/2013 12:28

Ooh thank you, I'll go and scour that now!

Right, I've just ordered five different £££ pairs from Wiggle, and will try and get hold of a pair of the Karrimor Warm from our local sportsdirect store too. My current Karrimor long xlite's have a thin extra foam layer on the front thigh lining, but the rest of it is single layer polyester, and I think I must feel the cold more than some of you because they're just not cutting it for me anymore! Will keep you posted as to the warmth and feel of what turns up.

Okay, well, my kit arrived today and to be honest I'm a little bit disappointed. I ordered four pairs of thights - two types of Nike, a Ronhill, and a Mizumo, and whilst they're all lovely they're not actually all that much better than the cheaper Karrimor I already have, and certainly not 3x the price better. The finishing is neater but the warmth/weight really isn't any different. I haven't actually run in any of them of course, but the feel of the fabrics doesn't make me think they'll be all that different. I think I'll try layer a pair of short tights on top of my long ones for my next run and see if that improves things. I'm also going to order a pair of those Karrimor Warm ones too.

Try the Karrimor windproof tights. More expensive at about £17 from Sports Direct buy I noticed a massive difference in warmth.

These are the ones.

TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 17/12/2013 17:20

Do you know I'd been wondering what the WP stood for on those!! I suspect then that the Xlite Warm are very similar to the ones I already have as they were about £14 ish back in March, and mine look better than the £10ish ordinary 'run' ones on the site. Think I'm going to have to plan a trip to our nearest SD store, there's a few bits and pieces I'd like to try.

OP posts:
TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 17/12/2013 17:23

Poshfrock - can you tell me some more about your Xlite WP ones please? Do they have the thicker lining on the front thigh, and are they lined/brushed all over the inside? I'm feeling the cold particularly on my bum and rear thighs & hamstrings atm.

OP posts:
poshfrock · 18/12/2013 11:04

Hi Muppets. I think you may already have the ones which I have so not sure that my recommendation was all that helpful! Yes they have a thicker lining on the front thigh and they are brushed inside. I must admit I don't really notice a cold bum but then mine is quite well padded.

TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 18/12/2013 14:35

Well, I just had a sneaky walk around town in one of the new pairs - it's blowing a gale here, and I confess they were a bit warmer than my current ones, but still not all the £££ better, and they still weren't just quite warm enough for me on my bums and hamstrings. So I think I'll order a pair of the WP ones anyway on the grounds that they won't be any worse than those I have now, and if they're not much better either then they'll still do as a spare pair (I don't have any spare bottoms atm!).

Clearly the layer of blubber covering my arse isn't thick enough already Hmm...
