Help! I need some trainers for running but low budget - what should I get?

Sports Direct usually has good deals on but you need to get trainers that suit your feet and running style, otherwise you risk injury. I'd go to a specialist running place and get a gait analysis. No point getting a pair of cheap shoes if they're going to fuck up your knees within a few weeks. Just let the running store know you're on a budget, they won't always try and flog you the most expensive pair.

Nike, Adidas and New Balance all tend to have cheaper shoes but you really need to find out how much support you need.

Get your gait, feet and legs properly assessed.

Take it from someone who has had to stop racing for 2 months because of injury. It has been a nightmare and cost me gazillions££££££££ in physio (I don't know how much because I daren't work it out).

Good running shoes are absolutely essential.

You put 4 times your body weight through your feet on every stride if you are a good runner and 3 times if you just plod. Think how many strides you take and then think what that is doing to your legs/feet/heels/hips/knees/ankles.

I was running in shoes that I thought were good but were completely wrong for me. I now have new ones that were fitted for me and the difference is amazing. I also have orthotics and my ankles are so much more stable.

If you are a serious runner then don't scrimp on shoes/orthotics.

It won't be cheap, but Christmas is coming so get them on your wish list.

I've recently started running and didn't want to spend much money but a friend who is v experienced at running said as eaurouge did that you have to have your gait analysed. So I did go to a specialist running shop and they advised what type/size of shoes I needed. I didn't buy from them as even the cheapest shoes were £70+ and the ones they advised were best for me were £99 Shock but I bought some of the same brand/style online that were last seasons stock so considerably cheaper (£29) Smile

OP - I have just noticed that your title says "trainers".

Whatever you do don't run in trainers if you are running any distance. You definitely need running shoes.

Just think about your feet pounding the ground and the impact it's causing.

Actually, you need to consider the type of ground you run on too. Are you a cross country runner? Fell runner? Road runner? Track runner? The specialist shops will fit you for the type (s) of running you do too.

Doh - sorry I didn't mean title, I meant post.

Wake up Andy.

Start Fitness often have good deals online in last season's colours, once you have had your gait analysed and know which shoe suits you.

I am a bit of a soft touch and would feel bad getting my gait analysed and then not buying from the shop. So I brought from them initially but bought the same model next time online. I am very heavy footed so go through several pairs a year. Expensive business but cheaper than the gym!!

I do what purplerunner suggests but have no guilty conscience about it. Also buy more than one pair when you find good ones at a good price.
StartFitness is v good. I also find good deals by just googling the style and seeing what prices and sellers come up.
asics and saucony are what I buy as they suit my narrow feet/heels and my mild pronation.

principalitygirl · 19/11/2013 15:56

got my latest pair of sauconys at my local DW store for a good price. they don't do gait analysis but do label shoes as being more for either support or cushioning which is helpful if you know more or less what you need.

sammisatt · 20/11/2013 19:31

You absolutely must buy a good brand. Its the one thing you shouldnt scrimp on.

I bought my asics half price on amazon.

SparklyFucker · 22/11/2013 17:50

Asics are a decent brand with shoes at most price points and to suit various different gaits. Get a gait analysis done, and then buy the last season's version of what they recommend, online. You'll halve your cost that way. I mildly over pronate so currently use an Asics Gel 1170 shoe - last years is the 1170 I think, the year before that is the 1160 and so on. The RRP is about £90, but you can nearly always get last seasons colours for less than £45-£50.
