Hip pain after running

I started running over the summer and am slowly building up. Can manage 5k now with some run/walk intervals. Have had gait checked and proper shoes fitted but the last three times I've been running I have had pain in the muscles around the outside of the hip. It oddly wasn't there before I got my new shoes fitted, and even though I didn't run at all last week, the pain didn't subside.

Any ideas from any seasoned runners? I am loving running and really don't want to stop! (Especially as I've just paid £100 for new shoes Grin)

Hmm, has anything else changed apart from the shoes? Did the shop suggest you needed a big change in your style of shoe? It might be worth asking the shop if they can advise, or recommend a physio? You can also check their returns policy.

Good luck.

Is the pain is on the outside of your hip and worse after sitting down? Could be hip bursitis which is inflammation of the bursa round the top of your hip bone. Can be caused by over-training, poor running style or the wrong trainers.

I am struggling with this just now, not been able to train for 6 weeks and have had to withdraw from my first half marathon next Sunday, gutted. I apparently over-pronate and should have been wearing a stability shoe but was wearing a neutral one. Because I was increasing distances, my form would worsen as I got tired, putting extra strain on my hip.

Had a session with a sports physio, another later this week. She has given me soft tissue massage and ultrasound, as well as advising rest. Got strengthening exercises to do as well.

If you Google hip bursitis you'll get more information. Hope your hip is better soon!

Thanks both.
Blue The only other thing that changed was that I stopped my cardio workouts to run instead. I had proper shoes fitted for my over pronate and it felt much better to run, the pains started maybe four weeks after I bought them.
Purple yes, that sounds like it. I have been wearing a stability shoe, I'm really not convinced the shoe is the problem. Poor running style might be though. I'm making it up as I go along because I've never done any running before. I don't know how I would correct that though, without seeing a professional, which I can't afford atm. Did a regular cardio workout yesterday, and lots of stretching and it feels much better today. Maybe I need to keep up with the exercise until I get stronger at running?
