Hi - I stupidly, after about 4 months of doing C25K (with gaps, had done it before a couple of years back but stopped running) signed up for a 10K run for the Stroke association today. I signed up 3 weeks ago, my Nan died of a stroke in March and just felt I had to...it is looming, and I am worried! I managed 6k earlier in the week and a few times before that, but never without walking up the hills, I just think I am not going to be able to do it.

It doesn't help that despite lots of support from friends and colleagues, my family have not even mentioned it. They know it is a huge challenge for me, I have posted my just giving page on FB, told them about it etc - no sponsorship, no good lucks, nothing. They only live down the road. I will have DD and DH with me when I finish it, but that is all. Feel a bit let down. They were very close to my nan, it was a shock when she passed away, but they have sponsored me for Race For Life in the past, as she had cancer earlier in her life.

Anyway, just looking for words of wisdom/practical things I can do! I am going to stretch and drink lots of water, take a brisk walk down there (5-10mins) and do the warm up.

My knees hurt just thinking about it though!

Nothing wise to add but want to say good luck, pace yourself, you can do it! You wait, you'll be signing up for another once you've smashed this one Smile

Thanks - a woman at work is doing a marathon in a couple of weeks, I found myself thinking...hmm, maybe in a few months.....

Update to let us know how you get on? Once you cross the line and see your DH and DD waiting for you nothing else will matter

HeySoulSister · 21/09/2013 10:38

You'll do it! The crowd will cheer you on

You managed 6k so you will do fine, good luck!

Lizzylou · 21/09/2013 10:40

You will be fantastic! Good luck and let us know how you get on Smile

drzeus · 21/09/2013 10:42

Good luck, you CAN do it!

Tips:
Remember to hydrate.
Following point 1, remember to go to the loo!
Don't go off too fast (yes people will overtake you, let them)
When you pass 5K, tell yourself your over half way.
If you feel your getting a bit tired just try and relax (my shoulders always get really tense)
Smile (particularly if you see a camera)
Feel incredibly proud of your achievement
Feel free to feel a teeny bit smug too!

Enjoy!

PS Remember to post and tell us all about it!

Thank you all - I checked this thread on my phone before we warmed up and it did help! I did it in 1hr 5mins, really pleased with myself, I think I could have done it in an hour or under but I got a bit breathless and panicked a bit just after the second lap began, and again at a hill just before the finish, had a bit of a panicky thing where I struggled to breathe, hasn't happened since I was a teenager, but just walked a tiny bit and talked to another lady running 15K and it got easier.

I paced myself well, and even though was out of breath at the end I think I recovered pretty quickly. My right knee is really sore though, has been for a few weeks when running now, going to get a support for it I think.

So pleased with myself, have raised nearly £100, did get a text from my mum saying well done but that was about it, DD and DH waiting for me at the end was lovely though.

I am thinking I can probably manage 10K round the park at the weekends now...might reward myself with a nice running jacket for the winter....Smile
