Think I've broken my toe...when can I run again?!?

I think I broke my toe last night, walking is very painful this morning. I go out 3 times a week to run or do boot camp (lots of running). I was planning on going out this morning but looks like I'll be stuck at home instead. Please tell me I'll be out running in a few days?? I may go insane if I don't get my fix. I could go for a swim but it's not quite the same Sad.

I would get it x- rayed then you know what you are dealing with. I wouldn't run on a broken toe as I'd be worried about messing up the healing and ending up with a wonky toe. You might be okay with a bruised one but I'd still take up to a week off. Sorry it's not what you want to hear, but running puts a lot of strain on the toes and you'll end up running wonky and probably cause another injury.

If you do stop, try cycling, do some core stuff, upper body strength training or fast swimming. I was laid up for three months last year with a running injury, it was a pain but I found other stuff to do and got in best shape I'd ever been in. I'm not so bothered about running now, but believe me i do understand your frustration!!!

You'll be lucky if you can get it x-rayed on the NHS. Their argument is that as there is nothing they can do, there is no point in a formal diagnosis (or maybe that's just Stoke Mandeville).

If it truly is broken, then it'll be a minimum of 6 weeks before you can run again. Maybe longer before you can run without pain and build up your speed/distance again.

I found the elliptical trainer at the gym was a type of cardio I could do with a broken toe (after the first couple of weeks anyway).

Good luck.

I'm with Glitter, I've had injuries from running and found other ways to get my cardio exercise fix (swimming & gym cv equipment) it might not seem as good as running but it's better than nothing.

As long as you get your heart rate in the same ballpark you should be getting most of the benefits of running

I think the only person that could tell you would be a medical professional who's seen it irl...is this something the gp would look at?

Big toes are apparently a lot more significant than little ones.

They can affect your balance etc if not set properly - so if it's one of the bigger ones I'd get it looked at.

I broke my middle toe almost a month ago. I ran earlier this week for the first time - It felt OK at the time - but killed me that night and the next day it was swollen and sore to walk on. It feels OK now - but I am gonna leave it at least another 2 weeks before I try again.

I'm not going anywhere near A&E so will see how it goes, and hope it's just badly bruised. It does feel a bit better today and I've run round a bit with the dc's.

I'm not a gym member and finances are a bit tight so my monthly boot camp membership and running is all I've got. I do have a mountain bike gathering dust in the garage so may have to dig that out. I'm booked onto a muddy obstacle race in a couple of weeks and (was) really looking forward to it Sad.
