ssmile we are at PIL's this weekend and have brought the bikes up so we can go out for a ride, but I'm ill too so I don't know if we will make it out tomorrow either Sad I was really looking forward to it too. Especially as we have a babysitter!

Elliptic5 · 25/01/2015 09:03

ssmile DH bought me a pair of clear Endura cycling glasses for Christmas, I'm pretty sure they are these ones. Got some good reviews and I find them quite good.

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 25/01/2015 10:28

Bolle Safety glasses!

minkGrundy · 25/01/2015 10:31

minkGrundy · 25/01/2015 10:33

minkGrundy · 25/01/2015 10:35

ssmile i have a set with changeable lenses. Blue, pink for lowlight, and dark. 20 ish I think from wiggle.

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 25/01/2015 11:06

Road or mtb, minkGrundy? (or cx/track/bmx/fat/etc!)

FelixFelix · 25/01/2015 12:45

Hi mink!

CMOTDibbler · 25/01/2015 14:48

Hi, can I join in? I just have the two bikes - a Specialized hybrid and a Cannondale road bike, and I do a bit of triathlon (slowly) and shorter sportives (but getting longer). I ride (and swim obv) one handed due to disability, so am v happy to have finally got a 'operate two brakes from one lever' on the new road bike which makes descents a lot less exciting!

Just back from a nice 20 mile ride with ds(8) and dh. It was a bit parky outside, but a lot better than it would have been to go out with the club ride today which means leaving at 8.30.

minkGrundy · 25/01/2015 15:38

I have a road bike which I love. Currently on the turbo and I miss it. I do as much road as I can in summer but have never managed to get into group cycling (lp so I tend to cycle when I can)

I have a commuter for work.

And I recently bought a mtb even though I know nothing about them. Theory is it will be extreme weather commuter in winter as have had several weeks of infrequent cycling due to ice.
And now I have a mtb I guess I will have to go trail riding. But at the moment the indexing needs fixed (not great at that) and the brakes need adjusting (no idea with disc brakes)

I am looking for a cycling challenge this year but have yet to settle on what. I'd quite like to do some kind of off road A to B thing (rather than round and round. I could do sportive but not sure that is far enough out of the comfort zone.

CMOT glad your descents are getting less exciting.

minkGrundy · 25/01/2015 15:56

pipkin i have thought about TT for a while. Local club does an all comers 10mile. Might give it a go this summer. Have to say they are pretty fast though.

elliptic i went clipless this summer, apart from a couple of amusing spd fails it has been great. Tried cycling the other day without being clipped in and it was just wrong. I am waiting for the spd pedals for my latest bike to arrive.

See you are in Fife. Nice roads there for cycling. Rolling and well surfaced. I am in midlothian. Road surfaces are shocking and views aren't as nice either so I come over to Fife a bit and out to Stirling.

Elliptic5 · 25/01/2015 20:29

Everyone is putting me to shame with all their lovely bikes, but I can get about quite well with my hybrid Smile.
mink my area of Fife has a big network of cycle paths so we usually split our rides between those and the roads. DH and I went out on Saturday mostly on the cycle paths, we managed 14 miles but struggled a bit with some uphill rough track in the woods. Good to get out though.

minkGrundy · 25/01/2015 23:58

elliptic i used to have a hybrid and was very happy until a year ago. Then suddenly ended up with more bikes. Still not convinced that more than one bike is necessary. Although I do love my road bike I am sure if I'd never had it I wouldn't miss it. And I am still happy with my trusty hybrid. But now I do have the rb I wouldn't be parted from it.

FelixFelix · 31/01/2015 21:58

Lost you all again! Is anyone else really fed up with this weather? We are quite high up so have had shed loads of snow and ice so the roads are a no-go. Looking forward to spring.

Elliptic5 · 01/02/2015 08:50

We struggled out yesterday against the strong north wind, still some ice on the tracks as well. It was hard going and I got really cold despite all my layers, probably wasn't the best of ideas going cycling in those conditions.

CMOTDibbler · 01/02/2015 09:01

Too windy to go out today here, even for DH. So I took him and ds running yesterday morning, then swimming in the afternoon. This was the first time h had gone running in 26 years, and until 2 weeks ago he hadn't been swimming in 20 years Smile.

We watched the womens cyclocross world championships on Eurosport last night, and it was really great watching. I've never seen cyclocross before, and it was massively engaging

Anyone got prescription cycling sunglasses? Getting back into riding after a few years off and I am short sighted in one eye so whilst I can walk around without glasses for safety whilst driving I have prescription glasses. wondering if anyone had any that they recommend and aren't too expensive.

CMOTDibbler · 02/02/2015 22:23

I'd like to get some too LilMissSunshine - I'm terribly short sighted and not having sunglasses is a pain

Elliptic5 · 22/02/2015 09:10

Nearly lost this thread, thought I'd check in and see how everyone is doing.
We're still doing our Saturday bike rides, my daughters boyfriend has now joined us which is really great, he's a lot younger and fitter than us so it's spurring me on to look for longer rides.

One of my biggest bugbears is council cycle ride 'maps' some have very few directions and poorly drawn paths which seem to bear very little resemblance to any actual paths. Yesterday we had to miss out a long section of paths as we couldn't find where we meant to be, despite having a cycle app and another map as well as the council one. We ended up doing a lot of road cycling which cut 2-3 miles off the distance, I was very cross as we're trying to increase the mileage very week.
Never mind it was a good run and so far we've been very lucky with the weather at the weekends, and I've been able to eat all my favourite things and still keep my weight down Grin.

FelixFelix · 22/02/2015 19:14

Sounds great Elliptic (apart from the dodgy maps!) Grin

Weather has been constantly rubbish recently. A local cyclist was knocked over and killed by a motorist on one of the reliability rides here last weekend Sad It was at Bolton Abbey which is always full of cyclists. He had been riding for over 30 years and even ran a company which taught children to ride bikes. I feel terrible for his wife and young kids. This is why I worry when my DP is out doing miles and miles every week.

In happier news, I have a new helmet and lovely celeste Speedplay pedals to match my bike Smile it looks very pretty!

Elliptic5 · 22/02/2015 20:19

That's terrible Felix, I can understand why you worry about your DP.

Your helmet and pedals sound great, just looked the Speedplays up on the internet they are lovely - have they had an outing yet?

FelixFelix · 22/02/2015 20:34

Not yet, they are still in the box Grin I don't know how to fit them and DP is ill and unwilling to do it for me yet!

Elliptic5 · 28/02/2015 16:20

Just over 20 miles cycled today over some very hilly parts of Fife, some lovely views as well Smile.
DH is cross with himself as he had to get off and push in two places, but I think he's done really well as he has quite a few health problems and even my daughters boyfriend at half his age couldn't manage to cycle up one of the hills.
But I think I'll be planning a much flatter route for next weekend.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 28/02/2015 16:44

Hi there,

I've not really posted here before but I'm a relatively new cyclist (started last September) but gaining miles by the week and loving it so have recently felt the need to invest in a few bits of kit Grin. I've got myself some glasses with interchangeable lenses after spending much of my last ride squinting in the sun or rubbing out grit. Presumably the grey lenses are for sunny days, clear for overcast or evening riding but can anyone tell me when I'm supposed to use the yellow lenses?

Also, my SportsDirect £10 padded shorts are rubbish - any recommendations as I'm quite uncomfortable after an hour or so in the saddle.
