Hurt my knee running - what have I done??

I'm in pain!

I ran 15k yesterday evening. My knee was hurting a bit, especially going uphill (I stopped a couple of times to give it a rub).

(My last run it also hurt a little bit, but I had no effects afterwards and didn't run for a week at all. I cycle to work every day and that hasn't caused any pain at all.)

This morning it's agony. It hurts at the right-hand side of my right knee: it hurts if I press it and when I bend it. I can't bend it at all walking downstairs. If I sit on a chair I can raise my leg straight, but if I try to raise it bent it hurts like hell. Anyone got an idea what I might have done to it? I'm going on holiday on Thursday and was looking forward to plenty of trail runs in the Italian countryside. I'll try to get an appointment with a sports physio before I go, but I'm not sure I'll be able to. Any advice gratefully received!

Defiantly try and see a physiology.

Maybe your ITB I am loathe to diagnose over the internet, but have a Google and see if symptoms match.

Thanks - I have an appointment at 6 with a sport doctor. Hope he doesn't prescribe 2 weeks rest!

Romann, just wanted to say all the best with your appointment - hope you are able to get to the bottom of this, get treatment, and prevent the injury getting any worse.

I too am a runner and there's nothing worse than being sidelined through injury - both in terms of being unable to run, and also struggling with everyday activities like going up and down stairs.

All the best.

Thanks for the support. It didn't go very well tbh! He send it was very inflamed, needs an X-ray, I mustn't run, and I have wonky feet (the outside edges don't touch the ground as they should, so I have to get some custom-made insoles that cost a fortune. I don't have time for any of this before holidays, so I'll have to settle for swimming instead and work it out when I get back! In the meantime I have a boiling hot tight bandage and some arthritis medicine!

I am going to leave work early (hobbling) and buy some Birkenstocks I think.

If it's inflamed, take an anti-inflammatory. Ibuprofen or better yet, one specific to joints like Cartrex (sorry, no idea if it'a sold under the same name in the UK).

Also, ice often and elevate when you can, especially in the evenings.

Birkinstock are brilliant - after knee and foot injuries I've had I wear them as much as possible.
