Can exercising at home be as good as exercising at the gym?

I have been going to the gym and I really enjoy it. However, there has been a change in my working hours which means that I cannot go anymore. So I am thinking of exercising at home then going for a run in the evening.

I have 30 Day Shred. Will that be as good as going on machines at the gym? And can you be as organised about running as you can be on the treadmill?

I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks.

I've just done a 2.week diet & fitness bootcamp. All the exercises were done at home with no equipment needed and in 20 mins or under a day. I'm 8lb lighter and inches smaller and generally more toned, so yes you can do it at home.
I always found running outside more enjoyable but more tiring than running on a treadmill - think as ground doesn't move to help you in real world it requires more effort.

I exercise at home as I don't have a choice, mainly weights, yoga and skipping. I could do with more cardio but walk everywhere, at least 5 miles a day. It's all I can manage with work/ds etc. Did a workout this morning in the garden which was rather enjoyable.
You do have to be motivated though and prioritize, like today I let the housework go to fit in my workout.
Oh and decent music is a must!

Absolutely. I exercised at home when children were little in order to have some 'me' time. Fourteen years. Saved money and could fit it around everything else.

Have only recently graduated to the gym.Grin

Yes definately but I find I need more motivation when working out at home. Its very easy to stop when a comfy sofa is only two feet away.

I actually found the 30 day shred to be more effective than going to the gym- but that may have something to do with my own personality/mental make-up! I only used the machines and weights at the gym, rather than join the classes etc.

I like being able to get the whole thing done and dusted in 20 mins, with the option of adding in a run afterwards if I'm not collapsed on the floor in a heap.

Jillian Michaels' method of utilising as many muscle groups as possible at the same time seems to work. I have noticed an improvement in my abs, although not so much in triceps (so still got those goddam bingo wings), so some extra strength work might be required, if that's what you're looking for.

I've moved on to Ripped in 30, which is hard work, but fun. (if you like sweating a lot Grin) And I hear good but scary things about Insanity.

Yes if you do it properly! Actually more time effective as no travelling and you can shower at home.

I lost 4 stone doing 30-40 mins of aerobic exercise at home 5-6 times a week. Would do it either first thing in a morning or once ds was in bed, it became a habit. Involved weights, floor work and running on the spot/squats etc. I also walked lots (5 miles most days). You've just got to move a lot, get tired and keep going, don't sit down. Doesn't matter where you do it.

I'm 39 weeks pregnant and intend to start again once baby comes and I've got the all clear to start again.

That's great! Well done! I have 30 Day Shred but it's still in its cellophane Blush. I'll get some weights at the weekend and start on Monday.

Thanks again for your replies.
