How many times a week do you exercise ?

I have just started a new gym regime yesterday. A personal trainer made me a plan. I'm supposed to go this plan 3 times a week.

If I add a couple of classes (spin, body tone etc) and a 1 or 2 5k run in the mix, do you think I'll see some results ? I'm 2 stones overweight and 34 years old.

I'd like to hear from you !

Thank you for your advice needabitofsunshine..Unfortunately, I can't pay a pt but I hope next year ! However, one did me a great program which I cant be bored with as it varies..exemple : On monday, I did some cross training then some resistance machine aimed especially at my arms then abs. Tonight I'll go on the treadmill then do resistance machine aimed a bit more a the legs then abs...

I think I'm not going to go crazy...I'm going to watch what I eat and exercise but not everyday.

Good for you. I find the pounds drop off when I give up/cut back on the old vino.

I have to be honest, I did a lots of running/zumba etc..but I have ruined all my efforts by eating a family bag of m&ms/maltesers..etc pretty much every night..with this out of the picture almost completely I think I'll get somewhere ! With the right mindest I'll manage to find a balance between sensible eating and exercise !! This thread is really useful !!

I train 6 days a week- about 15 hours in total.
Admittedly, as I teenager I was quite a high level in gymnastics (and was made to do it by parents) so I'm used to training everyday.

Mondays- Circuit training 1hr, then core/yoga til I get bored
Tuesdays- Swimming 1hr then triathlon swimming for 1hr
Wednesdays-Circuit training 1hr, then core/martial arts til I get bored
Thursdays- Weights/Bodyweight 2hr
Friday-day off
Saturday- 10 mile run then 2hrs Tae Kwon Do (tbh, black belt so expected to put the hours in)
Sunday- 2 hrs weights/core.

I must stress that please don't think I want to be smug- I really do enjoy training. I've found that is the key- I HATE spin (don't know why as it's a great workout) so I tend to stick to what I enjoy, but everyone else saying that diet is 80% of it are right- cut out as many carbs as you can (I found that having a "1 carb meal a day" mantra worked wonders for me- I lost 2 stone of fat in 2 months doing that).....
Enjoy yourself but don't get hung up if you miss any sessions!

I'm with spin on this, who strangely hates spinning Grin. I do a mixture of classes, Bodypump, Bodyattack,Zumba,Sh'bam etc ie cardio and resistance as it keeps your muscles active!

I love spinning Grin and would do it every time I go to the gym, but I know that I need to do weights (especially at my age Wink) so do a deal with myself and will do one weights class and then do spin afterwards or spin then weights.

I try for 5 classes per week and will double up to save time and squash more in. In the better weather I cycle for pleasure and I also walk to work three times per week so get 6 half hour walks in per week

I actually really hate gyms, so will do almost anything to avoid them (apart from Crossfit gyms, I like them). I do a lot of circuit training and heavy weights, as well as some sprints/interval training, with the the odd longer run thrown into the mix as well. I am exceptionally lucky and have converted our annexe into a gym at home and have it kitted out with rings, rower, bumpers, kettlebells etc. Love it - can work out to my heart´s content without encountering another smelly sweaty soul!

I just joined a gym today after a ten year hiatus (though I have been exercising in that time - running, walking, swimming). I find I lose the most weight when I reduce my calories (though not too low - no crash dieting for me as I love eating). I use MyFitnessPal for logging calories. I've lost over two stones since June on 1800 cals a day (I'm 5ft 4) and swimming twice a week. I find the exercise tones me up and gives me more energy so my metabolism is better.

Now I've joined a gym I plan on doing swimming twice or thrice a week and one session on cardio machines.

Building exercise into your day is the best way, imo.

I do the school run by bike (about 40-50 minutes on the bike), at least four days per week.

On top of that, I run three to five times a week, swim at least once, and often do other random bike rides to get around. It all adds up. (I do try to take one day off per week though)

it depends what you consider exercise, I run about 20 miles a week and have 4 weight training sessions of about 45 minutes each, then yoga 45 minutes 5 times per week.
Also walk for an average of 45 minutes per day.
Rest of the time I'm just knackered:o

I'm 33 and i've lost a stone since August. I started doing gym three times a week but quickly discovered I liked classes better. I do aerobics on Monday, zumba on wed and circuits or boxercise fridays. However I badly injured my knee and couldn't exercise for six Weeks but I actually lost the most weight then...you need to cut calories to lose weight. The exercise builds muscle which is heavier than fat which is why weight loss is slower when exercising.

Bloody hell. I am just so amazed (and jealous) of people like Mercury! I make that well over 9 hours a week before stretching/showers and the walking on top! Do you work FT? I am fairly fit i would say but am average day has me out of the house from 6am until around 6pm before I add exercise in, and that is before I spend any time with dd, DH or do any cooking/housework. At least 2 hours commute (usually longer) which can only be done by cat and no time for a lunch break. Either lunch meetings or eaten at desk. How do you fit that amount in ?!

I do about 7/8 sessions a week...my schedule would be something like this:-

Sunday - Badminton with DP
Monday - 1 hr spin
Tue - 1 hr HBT
Wed - 1 hr spin in morning and then 1 hr pole fitness evening
Thu - Spin
Fri - HBT

Would normally fit another pole session in one evening

Sat - REST DAY :)

I work out twice a week. I have lost weight and toned up.

Two to three times per week and eating a sensible low carb diet has worked for me without being difficult, time consuming or restrictive.

I think doing 7 plus sessions a week would drive me fucking demented after a while and I would either give up or become addicted. I want to be fit for my life. I don't want to live in the bloody gym.

Thistledew · 26/11/2012 12:15

I commute by bike 2-4 times a week, which is an hour each way. I then go out for a 3.5-4 hour ride at the weekend at a fairly intensive level. I have lost a stone in the past year through exercise alone, although I have put on quite a bit of muscle and toned up well so look and feel like I have lost more. I haven't dieted at all- I eat pretty healthily anyway so just started watching my portion size a little better.

Mercury - me too. I don't force myself to go at all, I just love it. Not so much the gym but I love the classes, esp spin, and I love pole fitness! If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't do it so much but I am at the stage where I ab hate missing a session. I am lucky in the fact that I incorporate it into my working day. I work for a really small company so I go to the morning classes every day but take that as my lunch hour.
