Embarrassing problem while running...

FernandoIsFaster · 11/07/2012 22:37

I did some interval training with my club tonight and when I was really pushing myself I started to wee and couldn't really stop Blush
No one noticed as I had black leggings on and I made my excuses and nipped off early but does this happen to anyone else? I have gone through child birth within last 2 years but surely I shouldn't be weeing myself! Is it a doctor job do you think? The shame!

I don't run for that reason, doc told me to do more exercises and am now trying to pluck up courage to go back as they have not helped much

I feel for you! Not had it quite as bad but when I started running after DS2 I had to watch what I drank and go to the toilet just before I started running. However, here are the two things I've found that help:

  1. using a mooncup
  2. start a programme of crunchie-style sit-ups (not the full on version) but every time you crunch, try and think of sucking your fanny in as well as your tummy. I try and do 100 a day and it has made a difference. Hope that helps!

Pelvic floor
Exercises look at patient.co.uk to see how to do properly. Will take 3 months to have true impact. Also see dr. They should ask about any tears
Etc during delivery. Do not Suffer in silence

I've had that, a couple of times!

It's not regularly, I used to get it a few years backwhen really pushing myself on hilly runs then it didn't happen for ages. It happened when I crosse the finish line at the London Marathon and then more recently when I was really out of sorts and struggling with my run.

Always it seems related to effort. I won't give up running because I love it. I know I have pelvic floor problems, I've had to have a vault repair following a radical hysterectomy years back and I have a rectocele. I take a pragmatic approach though and carry on running because of the physical and mental benefits.

I always wee before I go.

If it's an issue for you certainly see the Dr, there are things that can be done.
Pelvic floor exercises are a must as well.

The tena lady pads are great. I never run without one.

Discuss it with your GP. There are physios you can be referred to that specialise in helping women with this problem. They are normally female physios and they use a computer and some elctrodes to identify exactly where the weakness is then advise specific exercises you can do.
Its a really common problem and pelvic floor exercises are not always the answer. Sometimes it can be a thickening of muscle that causes the problem and they recomend self massage instead.

How would a mooncup help with urinary incontinence? Genuine question Smile

My problem with running is that I fart with every step Blush Grin

CoteDAzur · 10/08/2012 21:37

I think farts are an integral part of running, and also one big reason why it's so much better to run outdoors Grin

ClimbingPenguin · 12/08/2012 19:33

i went to the gynae physio and it has made a massive difference. I realised I wasn't doing the exercises anynear properly and it is different to how it is written down. get a referral from your gp

the farting is also a pelvic floor issue, the back passage was my weakest point, probably due to the third degree tear

BlueChampagne · 13/08/2012 13:02

BettySuarez I don't know but it does!
